Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois

Today, members of the Lake Forest Police Department proudly participated in the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics Illinois by carrying the Torch of Hope all the way down Sheridan rd. from Lake Bluff to Highwood.

The Torch Run represents the dedication of law enforcement officers across Illinois who come together each year to support the athletes, families, and mission of Special Olympics Illinois. We are honored to stand alongside our law enforcement partners from across the state in raising awareness and support for this outstanding organization.

We would also like to recognize our officers who participated in today's event. Your commitment to serving our community extends well beyond your daily duties and reflects the spirit of service, inclusion, and support that the Torch Run represents.

Thank you to Special Olympics Illinois for the incredible opportunities you provide to athletes throughout our state. We are proud to support your mission and the inspiring individuals you serve.

Gun Storage Check Week: June 1–7

This week is Gun Storage Check Week, a nationwide reminder that secure firearm storage saves lives. Safe storage can help prevent tragedies involving children, theft, and individuals in crisis. More than half of firearm-related deaths are suicides, and among veterans, that number rises to over 70%.

Take a few minutes this week to review your storage practices:
✅ Are your fi****ms locked and secured when not in use?
✅ Are you using safes, lock boxes, or cable locks?
✅ Have you considered the needs of children, teens, or someone experiencing a difficult time?
✅ Do you know where to get a free cable lock through Project ChildSafe?
✅ Do you have a plan for temporary offsite storage if needed?

Secure storage options include:
• Cable locks
• Lock boxes
• Lockable gun cases
• Gun cabinets and safes
Modern storage devices can provide both security and quick access through keys, codes, or biometric entry.

Hiding a firearm is not the same as securing it.

In Illinois, firearm owners should also be familiar with the Fi****ms, Child Protection statute: 720 ILCS 5/24-9.

This week—and every week—is a good time to review your safety habits as circumstances change.

Reminder: Unwanted fi****ms or ammunition can be turned in at the Lake Forest Police Department. Call (847) 234-2601 for more information.
