Our department has been blessed with a grant from ExxonMobil.
With this grant, we will be getting a gas meter that can detect different gases.
With this device, we will be able to detect the exact type of gas leak that may be occurring.

USDA Forest Service has two burns today.

1. Chickasawhay Ranger District has a prescribed burn planned for 05/20/2026 in Green Counties. The planned acres of Compartment 451, 452 burns are approximately 2,129. The burn is located approximately 6 miles Northwest of Sandhill . Smoke may be visible from Highway 42 and Highway 63 and may impact Forest Service Road 273 and Piave Plaza Road .

Ignition is planned to begin around 11:00 am and should be completed by 3 pm. Crews, equipment, engines, and a helicopter for aerial ignition will be working in this
location today.

2. De Soto Ranger District, is planning a prescribed burn in Harrison County, FS road 440 and Airey Tower Road . This planned prescribed burn will be 1535 acres. Smoke will be noticeable along Bethal Road, Airey Tower Road, and FS road 440. The smoke column will be visible from MS Hwy 49 and Airey Tower Road. Smoke Ahead signs will be deployed on the West and East ends of the burn on Bethal Road. Crews, equipment, engines, and a Drone for aerial ignition will be working in this location today. Especially along Bethal Road, Airey Tower Road, and FS Road 440 as crews will be working along these roads to contain the burn.

Please use caution in these areas.

The purpose of prescribed burns is to restore longleaf pine, wildlife habitat improvement ( gopher tortoise and black pine snake) and hazardous fuel reduction. This area is characterized by mostly a mixed age longleaf ecosystem. While the burn is primarily for hazardous fuel reduction there is a secondary benefit to Gopher Tortoise, and Black Pine Snake habitat.
