Last night, members of Laurel Fire Rescue had the opportunity to participate in a specialized railroad emergency response training with BNSF Railway.

Our crews received hands-on instruction covering rail operations, railcar identification, hazard awareness, emergency response procedures, and the unique challenges that come with incidents involving trains and railroad infrastructure. Training alongside BNSF personnel helps ensure we’re prepared to respond safely and effectively should an emergency ever occur on or near the railroad in our community.

A huge thank you to BNSF Railway for hosting this valuable training and for their continued partnership in helping keep our firefighters, first responders, and community safe.

We train today so we’re ready tomorrow.

This afternoon Columbus Fire Crews were paged to a fire near mile marker 408 on the north side of the interstate. Severity crews from Absarokee Volunteer Fire Rescue Department and Park City Fire Rescue were requested for mutual aid. Crews were able to contain and hold the fire to 1 acre. We appreciate the swift action of everyone involved and the Montana DNRC for helping us to staff our engines and our mututal aid partners with severity staffing for initial attack.

VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER

BLM officially changed our area from HIGH to VERY HIGH as of Monday, July 13, 2026. Use extreme caution and remember these simple fire safety tips:

🚫 County burn permit system is closed.

🚗 Don’t park or drive on dry grass.

🛠️ Avoid activities that create sparks during the hottest, windiest part of the day.

🚚 Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks on the roadway.

🚬 Never toss ci******es or smoking materials from your vehicle.
