Have you heard there are two statewide public questions on your ballot this fall?

Here’s a simple breakdown of public question #1, what it would change, and what informed voters should know before casting their vote.

Our Current System:
The Indiana Constitution allows courts to deny bail in very limited circumstances.

Proposed Change:
Courts would be able to deny bail for a person charged with a lower-level offense if a court determines they pose a risk and that no conditions of release would reasonably protect others or the community.

Now why would you vote for or against the proposed change? Let’s look at the top reasons for each.

Reasons to Vote Yes:
The proposed change provides another tool for the state to use to keep communities safe from high-risk and violent offenders.
The proposed changes require a clear and convincing evidence standard be met and the state must prove no other reasonable restriction would protect the community.

Reasons to Vote No:
Opponents, such as the ACLU and LWV, say these changes remove the bedrock principle of innocence until proven guilty as defendants could be held behind bars before being convicted of a crime.

The changes could be applied inconsistently across counties and judges, with potential for bias against certain communities of color or economic status.

The changes could be applied to any offense, not just violent crimes.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor our country’s first people. Boone County sits on the ancestral lands of the Miami Nation with connections to the Potawatomi, Wea, Piankashaw, Kickapoo, and Shawnee peoples.

Today, and every day, we celebrate Indigenous histories and cultures and remember whose land we are on. We recognize their resistance, perseverance, and continued contributions to the world.

Washington Township residents, you have a choice in who represents you on the township board. Adam C Jones for Washington Township Board is running to give back to the community his family has been part of for many years, to secure the township’s fire protection, and to help navigate the changes ahead.

What type of person do you want as a Washington Township Trustee? Gordon Brindle, is running for Washington Township Trustee and we’ll let one of his classmates, from Western Boone, tell you all about the type of leader he'll be for the township.

After 32 years of exhilarating active-duty service to our Nation, with duties in/with the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US State Department, Department of Homeland Defense, Department of Health and Human Services, and various foreign militaries, I can confirm character and leadership count. Both are fundamental in serving our public. Gordon's integrity, commitment, compassion, and civic devotion are bedrock attributes. I unreservedly endorse Gordon for Washington Township trustee.

-- Philip E. Jones, Colonel-Retired, US Armed Services

“What we are seeing is that voters are waking up to the fact that the Republican supermajority has left us with these incredibly devastating cuts to local community funding because of [property tax reform],” Armstrong told IndyStar. “Voters here are looking for representation from somebody who's going to have our interests at heart.”

The elections for two Indiana Senate seats that represent the suburbs north of Indianapolis are expected to be some of the most competitive this cycle.
