As we have been planning the Travis Letter Ceremony for a few months, one of the monumental pieces of the puzzle was delivered today from Bulverde, courtesy of David Spaugh, one of the donors of the piece.

The piece is a raw Limestone landscaping rock that will be used to mount the 2’ x 3’ bronze monument.

Thank you to Commissioner Mark Gillespie and the Precinct #1 crew for their help carefully unloading.

Sometimes, people send in the neatest items — and this is one of those times.

I’m currently trying to determine an approximate date for this poster.

The poster advertises a rodeo in Christine. Back then, rodeos and local picnics were promoted much like community events in small towns today.

Christine will also soon be receiving a well-deserved Texas Historical Marker, so keep an eye out for that in the future!

Today, we take the time to remember April 21, 1836.
We remember the courage shown at the Battle of San Jacinto—and we proudly honor four individuals whose stories may not appear in history books, but whose legacy lives on through those who remember them:

Placido McCarley (McCorley)
Juan Nepomuceno Navarro
Jonathan Burleson
Aaron Burleson

At the Atascosa County Historical Commission, we believe history is not just about the names recorded in books, but about all who played a role.

Honoring these ancestors ensures their place in the story of the Battle of San Jacinto is never forgotten.

It’s Poteet Strawberry Festival week ! We would like to know what your favorite thing is about the annual event ?
For me, it’s the Strawberry Nachos but overall, let’s not forget the Belle of the Ball: The Strawberry Shortcake !
The Poteet Grange has been serving this mainstay since the first Strawberry Festival in 1948!
Go by and get one and you’ll know why it’s been around so long.

This is a first for us as the Historical Commission. This is the very first time we have released anything such as this. I want to give sincere thanks to Fairy Tale Books for the opportunity to record and for the platform to share this valued history.

I also would like to thank Jim Collums, Jo Ann Moseley and Gary Moseley for coming in to share their memories.

Please listen and enjoy the history of the Genesis of the Poteet Strawberry Festival.
