Middle and high school science educators: A grant-funded opportunity is available to Nebraska public schools for the 2026–27 school year.

Through funding from the Nebraska Department of Education, Plasma Games is available at no cost and provides interactive activities, hands-on investigations, collaborative lessons, STEM career experiences and other resources for students in grades 6–12.

Professional development is also included at no cost. Plasma Games is also offering separate paid opportunities for some Nebraska science educators to review materials and participate in resource development. Read more here: www.nsea.org/26PlasmaGames.

We recognize that school resource officers face challenging situations and need appropriate training and resources to keep students and staff safe. But a use-of-force tool only addresses a situation after it has escalated. Instead, we should be prioritizing what educators have long asked for: additional investments in behavioral supports, mental-health resources, and other interventions that would address student needs before there is an incident.

We also believe that when there are changes to how school resource officers engage with students, that school leaders, educators, families and school boards should be informed and have an opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns. Clear communication helps build the trust and strong partnerships that are essential to safe schools.

Our shared goal is safe, supportive schools. Resources should support both crisis response and prevention, with an increased emphasis on the supports that can help students before a situation becomes a crisis.

Electric shock gloves are making headlines after Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced it was planning to outfit its agents with the technology. They've already been used in Nebraska for years.

ACTION ALERT!
The Trump administration is moving federal special education oversight out of the U.S. Department of Education and into the Department of Health and Human Services. These changes could create delays in services, funding uncertainty and new challenges for Nebraska students with disabilities and the educators who support them. NSEA is calling on all members to contact Nebraska’s U.S. Senators and Representatives TODAY. Tell Congress:
- Protect IDEA services and funding
- Keep special education expertise within the Department of Education
- Oppose actions that weaken support for students with disabilities

A great day at the STRONG Panhandle Conference in Gering on Wednesday. Thank you to all of the participants and presenters who came together for a day of collaboration, learning and shared ideas. We also enjoyed celebrating NSEA President Tim Royers on his birthday.

Educators gathered at the Omaha Education Association on Thursday for a day centered on leadership, learning and practical strategy sharing across the organization. The morning opened with a leadership panel featuring building representatives and local governance leaders. The afternoon shifted into a session on social and racial justice, led by Audel Salazar.
