🔥 Friendly Burn Permit Reminder 🔥

Before starting any outdoor burn, please take a few minutes to check the current fire danger, weather conditions, wind forecast, and any burn restrictions that may be in place.

The Livermore Falls Fire Department makes every effort to share daily Fire Danger updates and burn restriction information to help keep the public informed. However, conditions can change quickly, and it is still the responsibility of the person burning to make sure burning is allowed and can be done safely.

Before you burn, please remember to:

✅ Check the Maine Forest Service Wildfire Danger Report
✅ Review the day’s weather and wind conditions
✅ Make sure your burn permit is valid
✅ Keep water or a hose nearby
✅ Never leave a fire unattended

🚗 Weather Ready Wednesday - Summer Travel Starts with the Forecast

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons in Maine. Whether you're headed to the lake, the mountains, the coast, a campground, or just taking a weekend road trip, checking the weather before you leave can help keep everyone safe.

A beautiful morning can quickly turn into heavy rain, thunderstorms, fog, or strong winds later in the day. Taking just a few minutes to review the forecast can help you avoid hazardous travel conditions and make better decisions along the way.

Before you hit the road:
🌦️ Check the forecast for your destination—not just where you're starting.
⚡ Be aware of thunderstorms. If lightning is in the forecast, have a safe place to take shelter.
🌧️ Slow down during heavy rain and increase your following distance.
🚧 Never drive through flooded roads. Water depth can be deceiving, and the road underneath may be damaged.
📱 Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, especially if you're camping or traveling in unfamiliar areas.
🎒 Pack a few essentials, including water, a phone charger, flashlight, and a basic emergency kit.

A little planning goes a long way toward making your trip a safe one.

Describe the Condition—Don’t Diagnose It

When calling 911, you are not expected to determine exactly what caused the emergency or diagnose what is happening.

The dispatcher needs a clear description of the conditions you can observe. Trained responders can investigate the cause and determine what treatment or action may be needed when they arrive.

For example:
✅ “The person is not responding when I speak to them.”
Instead of:
❌ “They must be having a stroke.”

✅ “I smell gas inside the building.”
Instead of:
❌ “There is definitely a propane leak.”

✅ “There is a wire lying across the roadway.”
Instead of:
❌ “The wire is energized.”

✅ “I see smoke coming from the garage.”
Instead of:
❌ “An electrical fire started inside.”

Your observations are valuable. A guess can unintentionally become reported as a confirmed fact as information is passed from the caller to dispatch and then to responding crews.

Be ready to describe:
👀 What you can see
👂 What you can hear
👃 What you can smell
👥 How the people involved are acting or responding
⚠️ Any hazards you know are present
❓ Anything you are uncertain about

It is perfectly acceptable to say:
“I’m not sure what caused it.”
“I don’t know whether the wire is live.”
“I cannot tell what medical problem they are having.”
“I smell something unusual, but I do not know where it is coming from.”

Do not place yourself in danger trying to investigate. Move to a safe location, call 911, and answer the dispatcher’s questions as accurately as possible.

Forcible Entry Tools: Helping Firefighters Gain Access

Hi friends, Blaze here!

During an emergency, firefighters may need to quickly enter a locked or damaged building, open a secured door, or reach an area blocked by debris. That’s where forcible entry tools come in.

🛠️ Halligan Bar
A multipurpose tool used for prying, twisting, striking, and forcing doors or other barriers.

🪓 Flat-Head Axe
Often paired with a Halligan bar. Firefighters may use it for striking, cutting, and helping force entry.

🚪 The Irons
When a Halligan bar and flat-head axe are carried together, firefighters commonly call the pair “the irons.”

🔧 Different Tools for Different Obstacles
Departments may carry additional forcible entry tools depending on their apparatus, buildings, equipment, and local needs.

Firefighters train to use these tools carefully and efficiently. The goal is to gain access as quickly as possible while limiting unnecessary damage whenever conditions allow.

These tools may look simple, but in an emergency, they can help firefighters reach people, fire, and dangerous conditions when every second counts.

Your Information Helps Shape the Response

The information you provide during a 911 call can make a major difference in how quickly responders find the emergency, what resources are sent, and how crews prepare before they arrive.

Accurate information can help dispatchers:
📍 Locate you faster
A complete address, town, nearby intersection, landmark, or location on the property helps responders find the correct scene.

🚒 Send the appropriate resources
Different emergencies may require different personnel, vehicles, equipment, or supporting agencies.

⚠️ Prepare responders for hazards
Information about smoke, fire, downed wires, gas, chemicals, weapons, animals, or people who may be trapped can help crews approach more safely.

🚑 Prepare for patient care
Details about a person’s condition can help emergency medical responders understand what they may be facing.

🏘️ Protect the community
Clear and honest information helps reduce confusion, unnecessary risks, and delays.

You do not need to know every answer. Simply tell the dispatcher what you personally see, hear, smell, or know. Be honest when you are uncertain and explain whether information came from you or from someone else.

When emergency help is needed:
✅ Call 911 without delay.
✅ Give clear and truthful information.
✅ Report what you know and how you know it.
✅ Stay on the line and answer the dispatcher’s questions.
✅ Follow any safety instructions you receive.
