🚨Unfortunately, rental scams on Facebook Marketplace are still an ongoing issue. Please share this information with your friends and family to help them avoid falling victim to scammers. 🚨
🤨How does it work?
Scammers browse real estate websites and look for vacant listings. Once they find a vacant listing they use those listing photos and create a “house for rent” post on Marketplace posing as the homeowner. They usually have a story about being mad at their real estate agent and advise the consumer not to contact the listing agent or listing office with questions. The scammer will ask for a deposit up front to hold the rental via payment apps such as Apple Pay, CashApp, or Venmo. They ask the consumer to pay this without ever meeting in person or physically seeing the property. Once the consumer sends these funds, the conversation ends and no rental is delivered.
🕵Tip on how to avoid falling victim to these scams
1. Google the address of the home in question. If you find it is listed with a realtor, contact the listing agent or listing brokerage directly. Ask questions. Our duty is to give you honest information and we will notify you what the property status is.
2. Never send money via payment apps, especially when you have never met the person or physically viewed the property.
3. Think smart - if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
4. Visit Elevate Parcel - Cass County to view property records and see who truly owns the property. This information is public record. Scammers rarely use the owners true name.
