From Unhoused to EMS Professional: A Story of Resilience and Opportunity

When DeVontre moved from Texas to California, he came with a dream of becoming a firefighter. Shortly after arriving, he faced unexpected challenges, including housing instability, but he refused to give up on his future.

Through support from community partners and the NHS Compton EMS Corps Program, DeVontre found the opportunity he needed to move forward. He successfully completed the program, began working as an EMT, and recently earned acceptance into the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) Paramedic Program.

His journey reflects the power of perseverance, faith, discipline, and access to opportunity.

At NHS, we believe talent exists everywhere—opportunity should too.

A few years ago, Vermytyya Lopez made a decision that would change her family’s future. Tired of paying rent and ready to invest in something of her own, she began her homeownership journey with NHS.

Through our HOPE Homebuyer Orientation and guidance from our HUD-certified counselors, Vermytyya gained the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate the homebuying process—from budgeting and applications to understanding what to look for in a home.

Today, she is celebrating the purchase of her new home in Lancaster through NHS’ Greenline Home Program.

More than anything, she’s excited to have a place where her seven children and growing family can gather, create memories, and build a lasting legacy.
