FROM RESCUE TO SERVICE 🐾

We were grateful to hear from Shelter to Soldier co-founders Graham and Kyrié Bloem, who shared more about the journey ahead and what they look for when selecting a future service dog.

Rotary LA5 joined Shelter to Soldier at Wags & Walks to help select a rescue dog for an incredible new journey.

After meeting and evaluating two wonderful dogs, Guava and Gertie, Guava was selected as the strongest candidate to move forward with additional assessment and training toward becoming a service dog.

Through Rotary LA5’s sponsorship, her adoption, training, housing, and eventual placement will be supported along the way.

For Guava, this is just the beginning. ❤️🐶

A New Journey Begins 🐾

Rotary LA5 joined Shelter to Soldier at Wags & Walks to help select a rescue dog who will train to become a service dog and bring support and companionship to a veteran.

We met two wonderful dogs, Guava and Gertie, and after spending time getting to know them, Guava was selected to begin her next chapter with Shelter to Soldier. ❤️

From shelter dog to future service dog, we’re excited to follow Guava’s journey and the life she may one day help change.

AI is moving fast. The bigger question is: are we keeping up?

Last Friday at Rotary LA5, we had the pleasure of welcoming Larry Namer, Scott Page, Akash Kumar Panda, and Tony Materna for a thoughtful conversation about how AI is changing the way we create, work, learn, and connect.

What made the afternoon special wasn’t just the technology—it was the exchange of ideas, questions, and perspectives across the room.

As AI continues to move forward, the conversation reminded us that curiosity, creativity, connection, and human judgment matter more than ever.

Thank you to our panelists and everyone who joined us for another meaningful Friday together. 💙

After wrapping up her year as President of Rotary LA5, Brenda Wiewel traded meetings for museums, programs for plane tickets, and Los Angeles for a summer across Europe.

From Paris and Rome to cities throughout the Netherlands, Brenda took some well-earned time to explore, recharge, and enjoy the journey. 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇳🇱

A little reminder that even the busiest Rotarians deserve a summer adventure. ❤️

Wait… is that Ken Chong? 👀

Yep. Before the presidency, the programs, and 20+ years of service, Ken was once the new guy at LA5.

He joined Rotary LA5 in 2004.
By 2005, he was already showing up as a Program Sponsor.
In 2013–2014, he served as Club President.

And more than two decades later?
He’s still here. Still serving. Still making an impact.

Some members join a club.
Some become part of its story.

Ken’s LA5 journey is definitely one for the archives. 📰

Turns out, networking is a lot more fun with a ping pong paddle in your hand. 🏓

Last night, our LA5 Gateway Committee traded the luncheon table for the ping pong table at the Downtown YMCA — bringing together new and longtime members for an evening of friendly competition, conversation, and plenty of laughs.

A big thank you to fellow LA5 member Carol Pfannkuche, Senior Executive Director of the Ketchum-Downtown YMCA, for hosting us!
