50 children screened. 18 hearts mended. ♥️

Cardiologists from Panama, Houston and Boise came together in Managua for our third cardiac mission of the year in Nicaragua, providing cardiac interventions for 18 children. 🫀🇵🇦🇺🇸🇳🇮

The week also included more intensive training and exchanges in echocardiography alongside our Nicaraguan colleagues, an important part of building local capacity beyond each mission. Our board member Carmela de Brower was there representing Mending Kids. 🦋💜🏥

We’re grateful to NuMED for Children, Abbott, Teleflex, B. Braun, the Ministry of Health, Bear Givers, the Landon Family Endowment, Figs, and Edward Galvez’s Boy Scout Project for helping make this work possible.

[LONG POST AHEAD] When Korle Bu’s perfusionist was unexpectedly called away for a family emergency, their cardiac program could have come to a stop. When you are working to build local capacity, sometimes one missing person is all it takes.

Enter Mel. 💙

One of our veteran team members, Mel literally dropped everything and got on a plane to Ghana. She wasn’t even home. She left from a city she happened to be visiting and traveled solo to provide the perfusion support Korle Bu needed to keep operating.

And are we ever glad she happened to have her passport and vaccine card with her!

Getting her there was its own adventure. Ministry officials were woken in the middle of the night to help make it happen. With Mel just minutes away from checking in for her flight, the visa appeared in her email.

The stars aligned. Rabbits came out of hats. Mel made it to Ghana. 🇬🇭

We have a Mending Kids team headed to Korle Bu next month, but this wasn’t our mission. This was about supporting our partners when they needed us, so their local team could continue safely caring for the patients they were equipped to treat.

Because Mel stepped up, several more patients had their lives mended this week.

We have faith. We believe in miracles. And we love the partners and volunteers who make efforts like this possible.

Some had never been to a dentist. Others were still years away on waiting lists for the OR care they need.

Last Saturday, our Hometown Mission provided comprehensive dental care under anesthesia to 8 children and young adults with significant special needs, including X rays, dental surgery when needed, ENT exams and blood draws. 🦷🪥

For families who tirelessly advocate for their kids, finally getting this care was a huge relief.

This mission was held in collaboration with the CDA Foundation (California Dental Association) and made possible by grants from the Helen and Jose Colton Foundation (The Helen and Jose Colton Foundation) and Pepperdine Philanthropy Lab (Pepperdine University ), and by 40+ dental and medical providers and UCLA School of Dentistry volunteers who gave their time (MemorialCare UCLA School of Dentistry ELITE Sedation | SoCal Board-Certified Dental Anesthesiologists SoCal Sleep Dentistry Bliss Anesthesia Group).
