On Saturday, November 1, 2025, the County will issue a formal apology for the profound, far-reaching impact slavery has had on generations of Black Americans as part of a daylong event of education, reflection, and dialogue. The program, titled “A Day of Acknowledgement: Confronting the Legacy of Slavery,” will take place at Maryland Hall from 10 - 2 pm. The formal apology was requested by the Anne Arundel County Human Rights Commission, the NAACP, and the Caucus of African American Leaders.

In partnership with the Maryland State Archives, the program will provide historical context, tracing the journey from the arrival of enslaved Africans in Maryland through emancipation and beyond.

Attendance is free, but space is limited. Attendees must RSVP in advance at aacounty.org/ourhistory.

The bust of Malcolm X, the 27th member of Nebraska Hall of Fame, has been installed upon its limestone base with the official bronze plaque announcing his membership and contribution to society.

The bust on its pedestal joins other members of the Hall of Fame in the Nebraska Capitol Rotunda’s courtyard galleries.

The Jacksons also acquired wealth through racehorses, not only enslavement. The elder James Jackson became very well-known known for breeding thoroughbred racehorses.

When we took a trip to the Forks of Cypress plantation site, descendants were given a special gift. Although it was an emotionally tough time to see the place where two of my ancestors were, support made it easier to endure. I want to know who came before me. It matters I also want to share knowledge about how people lived long ago. History has value.
