The Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic (LIJC) is a community-based collaboration of Loyola Law School, Loyola Marymount University, Homeboy Industries Inc., and Dolores Mission Church. LIJC’s dual-pronged mission is to advance the rights of the indigent immigrant population in East Los Angeles through direct legal services, education, and community empowerment, while teaching law students effective i

mmigrants’ rights lawyering skills in a real world setting. Friday, August 28, 2026 from 9:00AM - 4:00PM in the City of Compton. Register before August 14th using the QR code. You’ll need the following documents:
DACA Work Permit Card (c33).
California (State-Issued) Driver’s License or Identification Card.
Social Security Card.
Copy of prior DACA Renewal application.
If applicable: Court dispositions or police report of any criminal arrests, charges, or convictions.

Part 2 of our civil penalties series focuses on what individuals should know if they receive a civil penalty notice. While receiving a notice can be overwhelming, it does not necessarily mean that a penalty is valid or that there are no legal defenses available. This post provides examples of potential defenses, documents that may help support a response, and important deadlines to keep in mind. Since these deadlines can be short, it is important to review any notice carefully and seek legal advice as soon as possible. To stay updated on a class action that can affect civil penalties, read about the class action lawsuit Maria L. v. Mullin, which challenges certain DHS immigration civil penalty practices and seeks relief for individuals who may have been affected. Civil penalties are not new, but they are being newly enforced. Many of the civil penalties discussed in this post have existed under federal immigration law for years. However, enforcement priorities and procedures can change over time, making it important to understand how these laws can be applied. Since immigration laws, regulations, and enforcement policies are subject to change, individuals who receive a civil penalty notice should review the notice carefully and seek legal advice as soon as possible. To stay updated on a class action that can affect civil penalties, read about the class action lawsuit Maria L. v. Mullin, which challenges certain DHS immigration civil penalty practices and seeks relief for individuals who may have been affected.  Missing a deadline may limit available options. We will discuss how to defend yourself in Part 2.
