Early Morning Fire at Island Oaks RV Resort
Yesterday on 07/09/2026 at approximately 1:45 a.m., Baker County Fire Rescue responded to Island Oaks RV Resort for the report of a possible structure fire.
Upon arrival, crews found the resort's maintenance facility and sewer treatment plant fully involved in fire. The incident also involved a large pole barn containing golf carts, lawn mowers, generators, LPG heaters, and other equipment, along with several storage containers and dumpsters.
A significant hazard quickly developed as two 1,000-gallon liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks became exposed to the fire and began venting through their pressure relief valves. Recognizing the imminent danger, firefighters conducted a tactical withdrawal and immediately initiated a large-scale evacuation of campers and residents in a nearby neighborhood.
Despite aggressive firefighting efforts, one of the LPG tanks experienced a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding V***r Explosion). The fire also spread into the surrounding woods, resulting in an approximately one-acre brush fire that threatened a neighboring subdivision.
The complexity of the incident required a coordinated response involving Baker County Fire Rescue, Macclenny Fire Rescue, Jacksonville Fire Rescue's Hazardous Materials Team, Baker County law enforcement, the Florida State Fire Marshal's Office, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and drone support from Miracles Towing and Hazard Response. Large-diameter hose was deployed to supplement the available water supply, and crews worked for several hours to bring the incident under control.
Once all fires were extinguished and hazards were mitigated, evacuation orders were lifted, allowing residents and campers to safely return.
We are grateful to report that no firefighters, law enforcement personnel, or civilians were injured during this incident.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal's Office.
