Ph.D. student M. Hamilton invites performance artist Vick Quezada and plant geneticist Jefferey Ross-Ibarra into conversation on the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies "Edge Effects" Podcast. The published conversation, titled "Thinking With Maíz," ranges from the name of the plant across contexts (maíz/maize/corn), to the materiality of maíz as a template for q***r survival, to the possibilities for generative thinking across disciplines as distinct as performance practice and plant genetics, to the radical shifts in attention necessary to dismantle colonial notions of separate-ness.

After two weeks in the archives, Ph.D. candidate Levi Sherman presented preliminary research at the University of Arizona’s Center for Creative Photography. His talk was the culmination of his Todd Walker Research Fellowship but only the beginning of his investigation into the impacts of personal computing and desktop publishing on artists’ books. Among the discoveries were several early experiments with computer-generated text, anticipating today’s AI buzz by four decades.

Course Highlight!
ART HIST 227: The Modernist Revolution
The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries witnessed the most radical transformations of art that the world has ever seen: avant-garde movements such as Futurism, Cubism, Dadaism, and Surrealism overturned millennia of tradition as they confronted rapid technological change and political upheaval. This fall, Prof. Daniel Spaulding’s freshman-friendly course ART HIST 227: The Modernist Revolution will ask what it meant for art to become modern.

Laken Sylvander, Ph.D. Student, was awarded a Center for Culture, History and the Environment Research Group Grant as lead applicant. For the 26-27 academic year, she will steward the "Craft, cartography, and climate: Mapping multispecies migration of the Great Lakes" interdisciplinary research group consisting of graduate students and faculty across the Nelson Institute, geography, folklore, American Indian studies, English, and more.

This research approaches cartography as material culture, exploring how migration—human and more-than-human—is mapped in the context of climate change and environmental shifts through folk craft traditions. Focusing on craft practices in the Great Lakes region that entangle place, movement and materiality—such as Hmong migration story cloths, quilting, and Awikhigan birchbark maps—the research group will investigate how and why humans, non-humans and their materials migrate and shape place, and how these stories are told, mapped and archived through diverse materials. This project will blend geography, art history, creative and craft-based storytelling, design history, relevant area studies and environmental science to document contemporary climate‑driven movement across species.
