AP Scores, Participation Rise with Healthy Classrooms, Staff Outreach

The faster pace and heavier workload that come with signing up for an Advanced Placement course have often been a source of intimidation for many high schoolers, yet it’s quite the opposite at Madison Schools, especially East. We are happy to report that student participation in AP classes and AP test scores are on the rise.

East High School Assistant Principal A.J. Simonini said getting students to sign up for the challenging coursework is rooted in relationship building and intentional conversations about the “why?”

“There's sometimes a preconceived notion that advanced placement courses should only – or only are – accessible to students headed to college,” Simonini said. “We want to ensure that that’s not the case at East High School.”

Together with school staff, he’s worked to help students understand that the benefits of AP exams go beyond just college credit. They serve as a relevant opportunity across fields; for example with job certification or licensing, practice with summative exams comes in handy.

“It's not just about getting kids into class; it's getting them to stay,” said Eric Arnold, East High School Math Teacher. “That work's been intentional and has been happening around the school more and more, and I think that that's really one reason we're seeing more success at East.”

We are so proud of the collaboration between our students and staff that is leading to these positive outcomes!

Madison Business Showcase: Level 5 Donuts!

🍩Level 5 Donuts at 2086 Atwood Ave is making one student’s school year a little sweeter!

Meet Ziri Corona, a student in East High School’s 18 and Beyond Program, who is gaining meaningful work experience at Level 5 Donuts. Owner Caitlin Rockey has been amazing at breaking down tasks and creating opportunities for Ziri to learn, practice, and build independence.

Ziri is becoming a rockstar! She’s learning skills like:
🔪Cutting, glazing & decorating donuts
🧽Washing dishes
📦Stocking & packaging
👩🏽‍🍳Building workplace and kitchen skills

We’re incredibly grateful to Caitlin and the Level 5 team for creating an inclusive environment where Ziri can contribute, learn, and be part of the team!

Lifetouch will be at East High School for picture make-ups for students who did not get their photo taken during the first week of school. Registration is not necessary, students just need to go to the Cafeteria Community Room (Rm G113) on Friday, September 25th between 7:30am-1:00pm to have their photo taken.

Students who took a photo during the first week of school but have not received their ID yet can also get their ID printed at this time. Students who paid for the Student Athletic Pass and took a photo and got their ID printed but is missing the Athletic Pass can get their ID reprinted at this time as well.

The play from Madison East Girls Volleyball senior outside hitter Tatum Inda has been a huge reason for the Purgolders’ success. She leads her team in kills and digs with 138 and 139 respectively, according to MaxPreps.

Join us for our Senior Future Planning Night featuring 2 and 4 year colleges on Wednesday, September 30th from 6-7pm where East High School Counselors will provide students and families information virtually via Google Meet.

Topics will include:
🧩Logistics and resources for applying to college
💻What a complete application looks like
💰An introduction to financial aid and scholarships
