Boardwalk Academy builds the capacity of our community by developing and preparing Lived-Experience Experts for leadership positions in our community. This 9-week development series strengthens the interpersonal and professional communication skills of non-traditional community leaders, whose critical voices and perspectives are often absent from decision-making tables.

2026 | Spring Boardwalk Academy sessions will be held virtually on nine consecutive Thursday evenings, September 17 - November 23 (5:00 – 7:00 pm)

We join our community in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Barbara Nichols, a trailblazing leader whose lifelong commitment to service, leadership and justice helped shape Dane County for generations.

Barbara's impact on United Way of Dane County and our community was profound. As a member of our Board of Directors and Chair of Vision Council, she helped strengthen our organization and advance solutions that improved the lives of older adults, families and neighbors across our community. Her wisdom, compassion and unwavering commitment to creating opportunity for all will continue to inspire our work.

In 2019, Women United of Dane County proudly honored Barbara with the Women United Philanthropy Award, recognizing her extraordinary leadership, generosity and dedication to improving the lives of others.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Barbara's family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. We are deeply grateful for her remarkable legacy of service and the countless ways she helped create a stronger Dane County.

Last month, our Boardwalk Alumni gathered for their annual Beyond Boardwalk event! They were able to meet other cohorts, connect with local nonprofits and learn about the challenges facing our community! It was a special night and we are so grateful to have these wonderful people ready to step up and support our community!

At United Way of Dane County, we know that lasting change happens when our community comes together around a shared purpose.

Through our Plan for Community Well-Being, we're bringing together partners, donors, volunteers and businesses to address our community's greatest challenges and create opportunities for every individuals, children and families to thrive.

We're proud to partner with Landmark Credit Union in support of our Reducing School Mobility initiative. By helping families achieve greater housing stability, we're working together to keep children connected to their schools, their support systems and the opportunities they need to succeed. Together, we're creating a stronger Dane County where everyone can thrive. .

As we continue to grow in the Madison area, we're committed to giving back to the communities we serve. 💙

That's why we're partnering with United Way of Dane County to support their Reducing School Mobility initiative. For every checking account opened at our Madison-area branches through the end of 2027, we'll donate $100, with a goal of investing up to $50,000 to help local families maintain housing stability and keep children connected to their schools.
