This month, we celebrate the rich history, vibrant cultures, traditions, achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latine communities in Dane County and across the country.

From arts and culture to business, education, community leadership and beyond, Hispanic and Latine voices continue to enrich our community in countless ways. We’re proud to celebrate the people, stories and traditions that make Dane County stronger and more vibrant.

At United Way of Dane County, we believe everyone has a role in building a community where all can thrive. Together with our nonprofit partners, businesses, community leaders, donors and volunteers, we’re working toward that vision every day.

Too often in Dane County your ZIP code and income significantly affect your quality of life, life expectancy and health outcomes. United Way’s infant and maternal health partnerships work to change that by improving outcomes for parents, babies and families.

“Maria” came to United Way partner Access Community Health Centers early in her pregnancy facing housing instability, food insecurity, limited transportation and little social support, along with the added challenge of gestational diabetes. Through Access’s Maternal Child Health program, she received coordinated, team-based care addressing both medical and social needs. Her care team helped her access stable housing, nutrition assistance and reliable transportation.

With consistent prenatal care, education and mental health screening, Maria improved her health and prepared for her baby’s arrival. After delivery, she received postpartum care, lactation support and guidance on infant well-being, including early literacy practices that promote bonding and brain development.

United Way works closely with our community partners to help people overcome barriers to healthy living and ensure neighbors can live their healthiest lives. By partnering with organizations like Access Community Health to advance our Healthy Community strategies, we work to strengthen families and advance a healthier community for every neighbor.

Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001 and the lives forever changed by that day.

We remember the people we lost, the first responders and the many people who stepped forward to help. We also remember the way communities came together in the days and weeks that followed, showing compassion, courage and care for one another.

Twenty-five years later, that spirit of coming together still matters. Today is a reminder of the strength we find in one another and the importance of looking out for our neighbors.

This Labor Day, we’re grateful for the generations of workers whose dedication has helped build stronger communities. We’re also proud of our longstanding partnership with the South Central Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, and the many ways we work together to support our neighbors across Dane County.

United Way’s partnership with the labor movement dates back to the 1940s. Today, that commitment continues through the AFL-CIO and our local partnership with the South Central Federation of Labor, which helps ensure worker voices are represented in our work, connects dislocated workers with resources and supports efforts to strengthen financial stability.

We’re grateful for the labor leaders, unions and workers who continue to bring their time, talent and commitment to our community. Together, we’re building a Dane County where all can thrive.

We’re kicking off our annual United Way campaign! 🎉

Yesterday, our staff came together for a breakfast to launch this year’s campaign and celebrate the power of caring. Throughout the campaign, we’ll be raising funds through our annual silent auction, bingo and egg raffle, with a goal of $132,000 to support our community and help create a Dane County where all can thrive.

We’re excited to come together, have a little fun and make a meaningful impact right here at home!

We’re grateful for the life, lessons and legacy of Dolly Parton.

Through her philanthropy, love for others and deep commitment to children and community well-being, Dolly showed us the power of kindness, generosity and coming together to create a better future.

We’re proud to have been among the United Ways across the country that partnered to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to our communities. Here in Dane County, this important work continues through our wonderful partners at Madison Reading Project, Inc., helping put books into the hands of local children.

And, in honor of Dolly, a fun fact: Our President & CEO, Renee Moe, says her first cassette tape was Dolly Parton’s Greatest Hits. ❤️

Thank you, Dolly, for showing us what it means to use your platform and resources to lift others up. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations.

Dolly Parton gave the world songs people knew by heart.

Through her Imagination Library, she also gave millions of children something to hold in their hands: a book of their own.

What began as the idea of mailing a free, age-appropriate book to a child every month grew into a global movement helping children discover the joy of reading from the very beginning.

Since 2009, United Way has been proud to help carry that vision into communities, partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library so more children could grow up with books of their own.

Dolly’s work showed how something as simple as a book could open a door to possibility. Her generosity and belief in children have helped shape generations of young readers.

We honor Dolly’s remarkable life, her friendship with United Way and the generations of young readers whose lives will continue to be shaped by the stories she helped place in their hands. Thank you, Dolly. ❤️
