As if producers didn't have enough to think of with markets and prices, New World Screwworm has entered the chat. It's confined to Texas and New Mexico for now, so what should Iowa producers do? Right now, nothing special. The best thing you can do to protect your companion animals and livestock is put your eyes on them; address all wounds, and report suspicious symptoms to IDALS.
Symptoms may include:
• smell of decaying flesh,
• evidence of fly strike,
• presence of larvae in wounds, or
• self-isolating from other animals or people.
They can't overwinter here either - this is a warm weather only issue for Iowa. For more information www.screwworm.gov is the USDA website that contains links to additional information.
