You’re killing us!!—said every cat and kitten that is already here waiting for a home!!
Please!!
Spay and neuter!!
"It is just a free kitten on Facebook! Why are you so upset! Mind your own business!" (How many times do rescuers hear this? A hundred times a year?)
Do you know why rescuers get SO upset when they see "free kittens" on Facebook or Craigslist? - Because we spend countless hours of our lives, volunteering time and energy trying to spay/neuter the maximum number of animals in our communities. It is exhausting work. The clinic paperwork, the transport, the clinics, hundreds of cats being loaded and unloaded for surgeries. We continue to try to help reduce cat overpopulation to help cats and our communities.
But, of course, one person allows a female cat to give birth (or perhaps it is an accident. Maybe she escaped the house or the kids let her out). And then a hundred other people in town, also allow their cat to get pregnant (and it is one female cat giving birth and there are only a few kittens, right?) .... But with rescues full to the brim - Now we have a 500-1000 unaltered kitties heading right back out to the community. "Free kittens for all"
Undoing ALL that work. All the time. All those sleepless hours.
While there is no exact national database tracking spay/neuter, animal welfare professionals note that the vast majority of kittens given away for free online do not get spayed or neutered (or even see a vet in their lifetime)
We have reached the time of year, where most rescuers are drowning in kittens..... And we are forced to helplessly watch kittens being given away online. It is difficult. Seeing people choose to undo the hundreds of hours spent just trying to prevent more unaltered cats. It adds to a brutal cycle of suffering that seems to never end
Please spay and neuter. Be part of the solution. Help your community and your neighbors. There is no way out of this unless we are all doing our part. Please stop handing kittens out for free ❤️🙌
