🍎 September is National Food Safety Month! 🥕

Keeping food safe doesn’t have to be complicated! A few simple habits can help protect your family from foodborne illness—especially babies, young children, pregnant women, and other family members who may be more vulnerable.

🧼 CLEAN
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before preparing or eating food. Don’t forget to clean countertops, cutting boards, and utensils!

🥩 SEPARATE
Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from foods that are ready to eat. Use separate cutting boards when possible.

🌡️ COOK
Cook foods to a safe internal temperature. A food thermometer is the best way to know your food is cooked safely—not just by how it looks!

❄️ CHILL
Refrigerate perishable foods within 2 hours (or within 1 hour if it’s over 90°F). Keep your refrigerator at 40°F or below.

👀 CHECK BEFORE YOU EAT
When in doubt, throw it out! If food looks, smells, or tastes questionable—or you aren't sure how long it has been sitting out—it’s safest not to eat it.

💡 WIC Tip:
When grocery shopping, pick up cold and frozen foods last and get them home and refrigerated as soon as possible.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is warning people across the state that they are at high risk of being bitten by mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus.

Health officials note that many people infected with West Nile virus never develop symptoms. But for those who do, illness can range from mild to life-threatening.
