🛴 🚲 On Tuesday, Sep. 1, at 10AM, Senator Nick Miller and I will co-host a hearing on Micromobility Solutions and Safety.

We’ll discuss ongoing efforts in Harrisburg to set clear life-saving safety and age rules for micromobility devices such as privately owned e scooters, e-bikes and the status of Abby’s Law (SB 1008) — and why this bipartisan bill remains stalled despite strong support. We’ll also look ahead at the future of micromobility and what communities need as these devices become more common statewide.

🌞 Summer is drawing to a close but unfortunately ticks remain active here in Delco and across the commonwealth. If you’re heading out to enjoy the last weekends of summer — whether at one of Delco’s great parks or just in your own backyard, garden, or neighborhood greenspace — take precautions.

🩸 Blacklegged ticks — primary carriers of Lyme and other diseases — stay active anytime temperatures rise above freezing, with adults peaking October–December.

🩺🏫 As students return to classrooms across Pennsylvania, families should review required immunizations, physical exams, and dental exams.

💉📋🪥 Pennsylvania requires specific vaccines, with provisions for limited exceptions, including tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), hepatitis B, varicella, plus Tdap and meningococcal conjugate for 7th and 12th graders. Students in Kindergarten, 6th grade, 11th grade, and all new students need a physical exam, while Kindergarten, 3rd grade, and 7th grade students must complete a dental exam.

📢 Tonight’s Overdose Awareness Vigil Is Canceled

Because of the threat of thunderstorms, we are canceling this evening’s Overdose Awareness Vigil at the Delaware County Courthouse. Safety comes first for families, advocates, and our community partners. But the mission to end stigma, raise awareness, and stand with every family affected by overdose doesn’t pause for the weather.

🕯️Lighting the Night for Overdose Awareness: One candle. One life. One community.

Tonight, we’re asking everyone who planned to attend — and anyone whose life or someone they love has been touched by substance use — to light a battery powered candle or small light and place it in your window. We invite those taking part to send a photograph and email it to [email protected] to help reduce stigma, build awareness, and remind others that no family carries this pain alone. Photos may be included in an upcoming social media post re: overdose awareness.

📅 Looking ahead a few days, we hope you’ll join us on Monday, August 31 at 5:30 PM for the Overdose Awareness & Memorial Walk at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Springfield. Hosted annually by Shevlin — the Delaware County nonprofit dedicated to lifting up individuals, families, and communities affected by Substance Use Disorder (SUD) — the walk marks the official day when communities the world over observe International Overdose Awareness Day and honor those we’ve lost and the families they left behind.

🥀 This month is American Artist Appreciation Month, and I had planned to celebrate that with a simple post spotlighting the arts and creative spaces here in Delaware County. But that sentiment feels overshadowed by the news of Dolly Parton’s passing — a truly iconic, transcending, outspoken American artist.

Dolly was a singer-songwriter, musician, actress, and author — but her impact reached far beyond her art. Her courage and outspoken nature made her a trailblazer for women, working people, and children’s literacy, and her authenticity, humility, and spirit brought her international adoration. The Imagination Library she created placed hundreds of millions of books into children’s hands — a lifelong commitment to literacy that stood alongside her philanthropy, which delivered millions for local schools, rural communities, public health research, animal welfare, wildfire recovery and disaster relief.

My thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those who felt a connection to her. We lost a good one.

It's National Dog Day, and I was happy to see that Chorizo and I got top billing on the Pennsylvania Senate Democrats' social media post. A well-deserved cameo for a dog who is the 26th District's biggest fan.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Eastman, a beloved member of the Springfield community, devoted family man, longtime hockey coach and mentor, and newly appointed member of the Springfield School Board.

Phil dedicated 28 years to coaching youth and high school hockey, positively impacting generations of young athletes both on and off the ice. He brought that same dedication and commitment to a remarkable 44-year career with PECO. His commitment to his family and community touched countless lives.

Phil was looking forward to bringing that same spirit of service to his new role on the School Board. It is especially heartbreaking that he did not have the opportunity to serve Springfield’s students and families and share the experience, perspective, and commitment he had to offer.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Phil’s wife, Maureen, his children and grandchildren, and the many friends, neighbors, players and families who knew and loved him.
