No opening burning allowed today due to elevated fire weather potential.

Dry and breezy conditions today, with relative humidities this afternoon expected to drop into the 35 to 50 percent range away from the Cape and islands. In addition, southwesterly wind gusts between 25 and 30 mph develop by this afternoon. When combined with the lack of recent significant rainfall, elevated fire weather potential will exist today.

Open burning is allowed today, Friday, March 27th. We ask that you keep piles smaller than usual and manageable, there will be some wind gusts throughout day.
As always, have a water source nearby and don’t hesitate to call 911 if a burn pile gets out of control.

Mendon Fire Dept was honored to participate in the 2nd annual “Battle of the Badges” dodgeball tournament. This great event helps raise money for the Michael Lisnow Respite Center and for Hopkinton Firefighter Johnny Krauss who is running this year’s Boston Marathon on behalf of the center.

Our team came up short in the dodgeball tournament, but it was a blast competing and being part of such a great event. Even better knowing it was all for a great cause.

Thanks to everyone who played, organized, and supported the tournament. Already looking forward to the next one!

It’s been an exciting week of accomplishments at Mendon Fire. Probationary career Firefighter Tim Morse passed his national registry exam to become a Massachusetts-certified paramedic. On-call Firefighter/EMT Ken McGann and career Firefighter/Paramedic Casey Hobson both completed their probationary year, earning the privilege of replacing their orange helmet shields with the black shield of a regular firefighter. Tonight, Recruit Firefighters Moritz Schmid and Hal Krause graduated from the call/volunteer firefighting academy; both became Pro Board-certified Firefighter I/II and will now wear the orange probationary firefighter shield for the next year while they continue to develop as firefighters.

Happy International Women’s Day to the Women of Mendon Fire Dept.

On the left is our executive assistant Terri Russell. Terri is the friendly voice on the other end of the telephone when calling the station Mon-Fri with a
question or to schedule an inspection.

On the right is Firefighter/Paramedic Casey Hobson. FF Hobson will reach the end of her probationary year here at MFD on Tuesday, March 10th. Her contributions make our town safer and stronger. Furthermore, she continues to grow as an asset to the Town and Dept having recently obtained her Paramedic certification.

Thank you both for all you do!

Good reminder from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services to check your Smoke/CO alarms today to make sure they are working properly, within date and if they are, to change the batteries if they aren’t a 10-year sealed battery.

As always, call 911 if your alarms are sounding so we can come investigate.

You've changed your clocks ... but have you checked your alarms? This is a great time to check the manufacturing date on the back of your smoke and CO alarms.

should be replaced after 10 years, and alarms should be replaced after 5, 7, or 10 years depending on the make and model. If they're still in their useful lifespan, replace the alkaline batteries in alarms that use them.

If not, choose replacements with a sealed, long-life battery from a well-known national brand with the mark of an independent testing lab like UL or Intertek/ETL. Smoke alarms that meet UL Standard 217, 8th edition or later, use the latest multi-criteria technology to reduce nuisance alarms caused by cooking smoke.
