Also Like & Follow our page for all the latest MTFH updates and fish stockings! 🎣 Thank you! 😊 The Mescalero Tribal Fish Hatchery is a very unique facility with a interesting past! Ran by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service from 1964 to 1999 the facility was known as the Mescalero National Fish Hatchery. In 2000 devastating fires and flooding from up the canyon deemed the hatchery a total loss with 100% fish kill. The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service gave the hatchery back to the Mescalero Apache Tribe. With a very small amount of funds from the Mescalero Apache Tribe and a couple of partner Tribes they literally brought back the hatchery from the ashes, and formed the Southwest Tribal Fisheries Commission! Making the Mescalero Tribal Fish Hatchery the only Tribal Hatchery in the Southwest! To this day the MOU Agreement between the Mescalero Apache Tribe and the Southwest Tribal Fisheries Commission is stronger than ever! With high hopes to continue the partnerships between; as of now, 19 member Tribes! The Mescalero Tribal Fish Hatchery is a non-profit organization and is committed to providing low cost fish through the Southwest Tribal Fisheries Commission to tribes throughout the Southwest! We are also involved in engaging in educational programs and to mentor all students including tribal youth in pursuing careers in natural resources!

Apologies for the late post, but we would just like to give a huge shout out to all of our Summer Youth for their hard work and dedication this summer! You guys did an amazing job! We hope you all had a fun time at the Hatchery!

We are also so happy you all got some Electro Fishing training in before you left as this is the rarest and probably most enjoyable training we get to do! These photos were from the first time our boat got out on the water. We got to collect so much data and caught massive Carp! Also we promised Smith-Root Headquarters we would post the photos of our first voyage 😅👍

⛈️Yesterday we received a substantial downpour of rain causing some mudslides up the canyon. This caused mud and debris to enter our waterway. Thankfully the fish are all doing okay due to the swift actions of our amazing crew by opening emergency valves, and clearing screens/tanks of debris. Might be a while until the water clears again but so far everything is okay at the Hatchery! 😎👍⛈️

🐟🚌Education is a huge part of what we do at the Hatchery and every Summer we try to send our Summer Youth on educational field trips to show them various types of hatcheries. This Summer our Staff and Youth took a field trip to the USFWS Dexter National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center. Huge thanks to Nathan and his amazing staff for giving us a very detailed and informative tour! You guys are awesome! Thank you! We all had a fun time! 🚌🐟
