We are responsible for operating and maintaining the City of Mesquite's Class 1, Municipal Landfill. We also operate the refuse hauling for the Virgin Valley area, which includes Mesquite, Bunkerville, and parts of Arizona. A QUICK CONTAINER REMINDER:

Long items like boards, branches, or poles can catch on the truck’s lifting equipment, damage the cart, or create a safety issue during collection.

We understand that trash cans fill up quickly, and sometimes getting everything ready for collection can be a challenge.

Please make sure all trash fits fully inside the container, with nothing sticking out and the lid able to close. At the same time, avoid forcing or tightly wedging rigid items into the cart. Boards, branches, boxes, and other bulky items can become lodged inside and prevent the trash from falling out when the container is emptied.

TTHE BEST RULE IS: everything should fit inside, the lid should close, and the contents should be able to fall out freely.

Update on Illegal Dumping Incident

We wanted to provide a quick update regarding the recent illegal dumping incident outside the landfill.

After reviewing the footage on a different device with better picture quality, we were able to obtain the vehicle’s license plate information.

We also received several calls from concerned community members who believed they knew the identity of the person involved. We sincerely appreciate those who took the time to reach out and share information.

At this point, we are now working with Mesquite Police Department, who can take it from here.

We want to thank everyone in the community for your concern, support, and willingness to help. It means a great deal to us. We all live in a beautiful community, and we want to keep it that way.

THIS IS NOT OK.

Last week, our cameras captured this pickup arriving at the landfill after it had closed.

The driver was hauling an uncovered load, which is already a problem. Uncovered loads allow trash and debris to blow out along the roadway, creating litter throughout our community and along the route to the landfill.

But what happened next is far worse.

Rather than returning during normal landfill hours, the driver turned onto a side road near the landfill entrance and dumped the load in the desert outside the landfill.

The final photo shows the garbage that was left behind.
Dumping trash in the desert is illegal. Period.

Unfortunately, the camera footage is not clear enough for us to positively identify the license plate. However, the truck is fairly distinctive.

If anyone recognizes this vehicle or has information about who was driving it, please contact us.

We work hard to keep our community and surrounding desert clean. Most residents do the right thing, and it is extremely frustrating to see someone decide that because the landfill is closed, the desert becomes their dumping ground.

A reminder:
-Cover and secure your loads.
-Check landfill hours before making the trip.
-If the landfill is closed, come back when it is open.
-Never dump waste in the desert.

COMMUNITY REMINDER: FIREWORKS DISPOSAL

Improperly discarded fireworks can quickly burn up a garbage can, damage collection equipment, or create a fire risk inside a garbage truck.

Please help keep everyone safe by following these steps after using fireworks:

Do not place used fireworks directly into your garbage can.

Used fireworks should be:

Soaked completely in water
Left to sit overnight
Bagged separately
Placed in the trash only after they are fully cooled and saturated

Even fireworks that look “spent” can still contain heat or smoldering material. A few extra minutes of care can prevent a burned can, property damage, or a dangerous truck fire.

OFFICE CLOSED INDEPENDENCE DAY (4TH OF JULY) 2026!

Please be advised that our office will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of Independence Day. The City of Mesquites Landfill will be open on Friday, July 3, 2026 but closed on Saturday, July 4, 2026, and will reopen on Monday, July 6, 2026, for normal operations.

There will be NO route changes for any services during this time.

CULDESAC NEIGHBORS: LET'S TALK TRASH DAY!

Navigating a tight cul-de-sac in a massive trash truck is a precision sport. Because our court is tight, our drivers need every single inch of available turning radius to get around safely.

To help them out and ensure everyone's trash gets picked up smoothly, here is a quick refresher on perfect can placement!

THE BIG MISCONCEPTION

Have you ever noticed your empty can sitting a few feet away from the curb after the truck leaves? It’s easy to think the driver wants them out that far, but please don't mistake that for a hint!

When the automated arm sets your empty bin back down, it naturally lands a bit further out in the street, often due to the truck's turning angle and/or the current situation of parked cars in the culdesac. If we start putting our full cans out away from the curb the next week, it blocks the truck's path and makes it much more difficult for the driver to maneuver. So remember, if it ends up there after dumping, that's ok. Placing it there for pickup is what can create the problem.

QUICK RULES FOR PERFECT PICKUP

To keep things running efficiently, always follow these three simple steps on pickup morning:

Stick to the Curb Edge: Always place your full cans right at the edge of the asphalt.

Keep Off the Sidewalk: Do not place bins on the sidewalk or too far back—the truck's arm can't reach them efficiently from there.

The 3-Foot Rule: Always leave at least 3 feet of space between your trash can and any other bin. This same spacing applies to parked cars, mailboxes, or any other objects. The mechanical arm needs that clearance to safely grab and dump your can without damaging anything!

PLASTIC RECYCLING TIP: CRUSH IT!

Our plastic recycling bins at Smith’s and Walmart are serviced multiple times each week, but air-filled bottles and bulky items can cause containers to fill much faster than necessary.
A quick squeeze or stomp before tossing plastics into the bin helps create more space for everyone.

BEST PRACTICES FOR PLASTIC RECYCLING:
• Crush plastic bottles and jugs when possible
• Empty liquids before recycling
• Keep trash and cardboard out of plastic bins
• Don’t bag recyclables — loose items work best

One crushed bottle can save the space of several uncrushed ones. Small effort. Big impact.
