It's common to hear noises coming from the Port of Milwaukee and Jones Island, but today the noise is coming from their neighbors across the water.
Harbor View Plaza's play structure is getting a fresh coat of paint and Komatsu Mining is next door building their cool new headquarters.
Can you hear the waterfront at work?

Our summer intern, Erin Ganzke, from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences gave her final presentation today for her #HabitatHotels internship. Some highlights of this summer's findings include:
*several observations of juvenile small mouth bass finding cover beneath Habitat Hotel baskets
*plants can grow very well in Milwaukee's inner harbor, and establishing their roots is essential for long-term plant survival
*a wet, stormy August and September made it difficult to complete regular sampling in the fall
*new ideas developed for improved sampling methods for next year to collect more data and video footage in all weather conditions
Special thanks to project funders Fund for Lake Michigan, and to National Fish and Wildlife Foundation who funded Erin's internship.
You can see a copy of Erin's presentation at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1RJFbO8RbSHIFl96JLv6rTIyPDXzR70IO or visit our Habitat Hotels website for more details. https://harbordistrict.org/projects/habitat-hotels/
Thanks everyone for coming to the Grand Trunk Wetland public meeting and special thanks to Brinn Labs for hosting and letting us play with their toys. Can you guess what Star Wars sound this is?
May the Fourth be with you.

The Habitat Hotels project is well underway! HDI staff are working with Bradley Tech High School students to build these underwater habitat structures, and this week students got to operate a new machine - the plasma cutter! The plasma cutter is an automated device which uses a jet stream of hot plasma to cut steel and other metals. This video shows a shelf bracket being cut. Next, students will weld fish shelves and underwater vegetation baskets to these brackets before the final Habitat Hotels are installed in the Inner Harbor.
