Harbor District Milwaukee

Harbor District Milwaukee The Harbor District Initiative seeks to catalyze the redevelopment of Milwaukee's Inner Harbor into a resilient waterfront.
The Harbor District Initiative brings together local, state, and federal government efforts, private sector interests, and community enthusiasm for the opportunity in the heart of our city. Our goal is to achieve a world-class revitalization of this area that sets a new standard for how waterfronts “work” environmentally, economically, and socially

The Harbor District has been at the center of our region’s prosperity for hundreds of years – first as a rice marsh with plentiful fish and game, then as an economic hub that served industries throughout the state. Now, much of its land sits abandoned or in disrepair, its waterways are polluted – and its potential is immense. The Harbor District Initiative brings together local, state, and federal government efforts, private sector interests, and community enthusiasm to achieve a world-class revitalization of this area for the benefit of the City and the Region. Our goal is to reinforce existing businesses and neighborhoods and set a new standard for how waterfronts “work” environmentally, economically, and socially. Over the next 18-24 months, the Harbor District Initiative will conduct a planning process to engage a broad array of stakeholders in crafting a vision for the area, and begin to build momentum and marshal resources to implement the vision.

Mission: The long-term goal of Harbor District, Inc. is to achieve a world-class revitalization of Milwaukee’s harbor that sets the standard for how waterfronts "work" —environmentally, economically, and socially—for the next century.

Last week friends from the Urban Ecology Center took a loop around the Kinnickinnic River Trail, south of Lincoln Ave. to survey for bats.

Using ultrasonic bat detectors (pictured below), 3 species of bats were recorded! The Eastern Red Bat, Big Brown Bat, and the Hoary Bat were active that night, which is a great count for Milwaukee.

Because bats can be difficult to see in the dark, the detectors help by picking up on the bats’ echolocation frequencies that are emitted as they fly overhead, transforming them into a visual chart from which each species can be identified.

Bats are incredibly important pollinators and pest-controllers and many are threatened in the state of Wisconsin. Keep your eyes peeled to the skies at night for these special critters!

What's in the harbor today? Saw the ship docked.
I just returned from a wonderful vacation to Milwaukee. Highlights of my trip were the riverwalk, harbor, and a few brewery tours including the good Lakefront. Why isn't there a bronze statue of Laverne and Shirley in addition to Fonzie? That kind of bugged me. I would have preferred a photo op with the ladies! Even though many locals may not appreciate the representation of Milwaukee by that show, Laverne and Shirley put your fine city on the map for many of us living in the lower U.S. #LaverneandShirley #Milwaukee
