Hennepin EMS is an urban/suburban 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Services Healthcare/Public Safety agency that handles more than 87,000 calls for service each year from the citizens and visitors of Hennepin County, Minnesota. Today is a day that weighs heavy on our hearts and minds. Six years ago, active-duty Paramedic Karl Meek died by su***de at the age of 44. We take a moment to remember him with respect and honesty.

Karl served the people of Hennepin County with compassionate and skillful care. He was a member of the Hennepin County Association of Paramedics and EMTs (HCAPE), where he also served as a Steward. He was a son, brother, mentor and friend. His dedication, love of music, sense of humor and smile have been missed by all who knew him.

We are thinking of Karl's family, colleagues, and many friends, and honor his memory today.

On August 27, 2025, Minneapolis Police Department Lt. Ryan Kelly arrived within minutes, disrupted an active threat, and began triaging patients of this horrific attack. There is no doubt that Lt. Kelly's heroic actions saved lives by ending the threat and expediting emergency care. We are proud to serve alongside Lt. Kelly and congratulate him on being awarded the Meritorious Service Award.

This week we celebrate our Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD) during National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week!

Our EMT/EMDs are often the first connection a patient or caller has to the EMS system, where information will be gathered for our responding crews. The EMT/EMDs also provide life-saving instructions over the phone prior to responder arrival, which can include CPR, bleeding control, and childbirth!

In 2025, this team handled more than 1.1 million radio transmissions, nearly 100,000 emergency calls, and 170,000 patient information relays from the field to emergency departments.

This week our Paramedic Trainee Program celebrated the completion of their program with a graduation ceremony! This group of team members began their journey as EMTs, spending 40 hours per week for the last 10 months completing the rigorous demands of our paramedic program. Their program graduation is a moment of pride, as once they pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam they will transition to their new role as Hennepin EMS paramedics and begin the Academy. Their next six months will consist of additional classroom education and instruction under a Field Training Officer to become street ready. A shout out not only to this cohort, but also to the Hennepin EMS Emergency and Critical Care Education team and paramedic preceptors for the dedication and hard work!

Dangerous to impossible travel conditions through Sunday. Health concerns for shovelers with the heavy snowpack. Potential for infrastructure damage leading to power loss.

BE PREPARED!
