💙 Volunteer Spotlight: Tre

For Tre, volunteering with CES is about something simple but powerful: making people feel seen and valued.

Tre first connected with CES about five years ago through his employer, MSI (Metro Sales Inc.), which has provided technology services to CES for more than 35 years. He saw being a volunteer driver for our Meals on Wheels program as an opportunity to give back to an organization he knows and respects.

One Meals on Wheels visit especially stayed with him. A neighbor shared how much isolation he was experiencing, and Tre stayed a little longer than scheduled to listen to his stories—from growing up in Chicago to memories of his family and childhood.

“That simple conversation reminded me how powerful it can be when someone feels seen and valued.”

That’s what keeps Tre coming back: the people. The neighbors, volunteers, and CES staff have become a community that feels like home, and Tre knows that sometimes the most meaningful thing we can give someone is our time and attention.

His advice to anyone considering volunteering? “Don’t be afraid to step into conversations.” By taking the time to connect with someone who might otherwise feel invisible, he says, you become part of their story, and their story becomes part of yours.

Tre, thank you for sharing your time, kindness, and stories with our neighbors. We’re so grateful to have you as part of the CES community! 💙

🐾National Dog Day | We Love Pets!

At CES, we believe no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and a beloved pet. ❤️🐾

Did you know CES has an Ani-Meals program? Through Ani-Meals, CES provides pet food, supplies, and veterinary care to Meals on Wheels clients who are struggling to care for their furry family members.

Last year, our incredible Ani-Meals volunteers:
🐶 Delivered more than 11,000 pounds of pet food
🐾 Made 941 deliveries
❤️ Helped 103 Meals on Wheels clients care for their 193 beloved pets
🐕 And 50 of those pets were dogs!

For many of our isolated older adult neighbors, pets provide companionship, comfort, purpose, and unconditional love. By helping keep pets healthy and well-fed, Ani-Meals helps our neighbors maintain those important bonds.

This National Dog Day, we're celebrating the special connection between people and their pets and the volunteers who help make that connection possible. Because at CES, we're here to nourish the whole family. 🐾❤️

📸 Meet one of our Ani-Meals families! We love seeing the happy faces (and wagging tails) that our volunteers get to visit.

🍎 🎒

The school year is just around the corner, and we want to keep our neighborhood kids fueled and ready to learn!

This week, we are stocking up on healthy back-to-school snacks. Think granola bars, raisins, fruit cups, applesauce pouches, crackers, and healthy grab-and-go treats.

These easy options make packing school lunches and after-school fuel a little easier for families, ensuring our neighborhood kids have the energy they need to power through their day. 💛

📍 Drop-off: Donations can be delivered to CES Monday-Thursday 9am-12pm, 1900 11th Ave S, Minneapolis.

🌟 Supporter of the Month: Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation 🌟

For more than a decade, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has been a steadfast partner in helping CES nourish our community and we are incredibly grateful.

Their most recent grant is helping CES build the “food access organization of the future” as the need for food assistance continues to grow. With their support, we’re expanding access through additional points of service, including our 24/7 food lockers, while modernizing the back-end technology that connects food shelf appointments, locker appointments, food pre-orders, and inventory management.

They're also helping us build a more robust resource hub, where neighbors can access additional services and connections that can help them move toward greater stability -all at a place they already know and trust: CES.

This investment is helping us be more accessible, connected, efficient, and responsive to the needs of our neighbors—today and for years to come.

Thank you, Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, for more than a decade of partnership and for helping CES imagine what’s next. We’re grateful to have you alongside us. ❤️

With the new school year just around the corner, we want to make sure every student in our community starts their day with a full stomach and the energy they need to learn and grow!

This week, we are collecting healthy breakfast items, especially low-sugar cereals, oatmeal, and breakfast bars, to help families kick off their busy school mornings.

A nutritious breakfast is the foundation for a successful school day. Your gift will help keep our shelves stocked with healthy options for local kids! 💛

📍 Drop-off: Donations can be delivered to CES Monday-Thursday 9am-12pm, 1900 11th Ave S, Minneapolis.

🍦 Hunger Heroes 🧼

An ice cream social and helping local neighbors? Now that’s a sweet combination!

A big thank you to the volunteers from Edina Community Lutheran Church for inviting our CES team out to their ice cream social, and for packing hygiene kits for us to share with the community.

These essential kits give local families immediate access to everyday care items they need most. We love seeing our partners find creative, fun ways to support our work. Thank you, Edina Community Lutheran Church, for your hospitality and generosity! 🍦💛

🥕 The cost of groceries is rising & we’re all feeling it🥕

If your grocery bill seems higher lately, you’re not imagining it. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, annual grocery inflation recently reached 2.9%, its highest year-over-year rate since August 2023.

We are hearing stories everyday about how our neighbors are feeling the squeeze. Even for households with steady incomes, higher grocery bills mean less room in the budget for housing, utilities, childcare, gas, and everything else. For our neighbors who were already struggling to make ends meet, the impact is even more significant.

At the same time, cuts and changes to federal SNAP benefits are putting additional pressure on household budgets - contributing to growing food insecurity in our community.

But here’s what gives us hope: we’re in this together. ❤️

More neighbors are turning to us for healthy, fresh, culturally familiar food. And because of our generous community, we can meet them with dignity and choice.

Grocery prices are rising but we are all coming together to ensure none of our neighbors have to miss a meal. Together, we are feeding our neighbors.

We are in need of diapers, an everyday necessity that is a major expense for young families. We accept diapers of all sizes to help ensure neighboring parents have the basic supplies they need to care for their bundles of joy💛

Want to help? Order online and have diapers delivered to CES or drop-off your donation at CES Monday-Thursday 9am-12pm, 1900 11th Ave S, Minneapolis.

August is Make-A-Will Month: a good reminder that planning for the future is one of the most meaningful ways you can care for the people and causes you care most about.

A will can help protect your family, make your wishes clear, and give you peace of mind about the future. And when you include a nonprofit like CES in your plans, your values and generosity can live for many years to come.

Whether through your will or estate, a retirement account, life insurance policy, or another beneficiary designation, a gift to CES can extend your generosity far into the future - helping ensure that generations of neighbors facing hunger can find nutritious food, dignity, connection, and hope.

You can turn hunger into hope for years to come. What a powerful gift💙

Thank you to our friends from River Valley Church - City Campus for spending time with us to make our space look its best for our visiting neighbors! 🌸✨

Their hardworking team rolled up their sleeves and tackled outdoors beautification projects around our building - weeding, planting, and bringing new life and care to our grounds.

Creating a welcoming, dignified visit for our neighbors starts from the moment they arrive at our doors, and we are grateful to River Valley Church for making CES feel so inviting 💛
