The Miller girls won 4-0 and the boys edged the Lakers 2-1 on Tuesday night at the annual Sylvester Cup, honoring John “Sly” Sylvester (Washburn ’91) who dedicated his adult life to helping others through soccer.

Washburn Black Box Theater classes took a field trip to the Pillsbury House last Wednesday to see “Four Women”.

Our students were buzzing about this incredible show that follows Nina Simone during her writing process of her song “Mississippi Goddamned”. Here is what they had to say:

“The acting and singing felt SO immersive, like I was being pulled in.”

“I assumed that groups of people- often oppressed, always think the same way and stand for the same things but yet it's quite the opposite. People have different goals and experiences and beliefs that often prevent them from seeing things the same way.”

“The mixed lady stood out to me. My mother is white, and my dad is black. A lot of the points she made stood out to me. I don't often see mixed characters and I was in the front row!”

“I learned a lot about Nina Simone and her beliefs as well as how black women went on the frontlines of marches and activist movements.”

“The writing was incredibly powerful!”

Tuesday, Sept. 29 Washburn will be hosting the Sylverter Cup, featuring matches between Washburn and Southwest (5 pm girls, 7 pm boys) honoring John “Sly” Sylvester (Washburn ’91) who dedicated his adult life to helping others. He played for the Minnesota Thunder in the late nineties, worked in the Minneapolis Public Schools (including a stint as the Washburn girls varsity coach), Harvest African-centered Prep School in North Minneapolis, and as the girl’s coaching director for the Minneapolis United Soccer Club. At the 2016 Sylvester Cup, John was inducted into the Washburn Millers Athletic Hall of Fame. John died on June 16, 2017, after a long battle with ALS. The annual Sylvester Cup matches between Washburn and Southwest honor John Sylvester’s legacy and contributions to Minnesota soccer. Each year we award scholarships to two Washburn athletes who exemplify John's spirit of service. WASHBURN STUDENT AT MAYORS’ DEBATE
Shyamana Kasat-Shors, co-captain of the WHS debate team, was selected as one of 4 student debaters from around the Twin Cities who took part in the Mayors’ Challenge Debate last Thursday 9/17/26 at Quincy Hall. They debated this year's national high school topic: Should the US implement National Health Insurance? The event also served as an important fundraiser for the MN Urban Debate League to provide programming in local schools, raising over $150,000.

After the debate the 4 students each asked a question to the Mayors, and Shyamana asked them to give examples of what they have done to promote youth civic engagement. Any student interested, regardless of experience, is welcome to join Debate for opportunities to learn to be assertive and to make their voice heard in conversations that often exclude young people.

The girls and boys cross country teams competed in the Roy Griak Meet at Fort Snelling on Saturday, Sep. 19, 2026. The meet featured runners from the upper midwest and Canada. The boys edged past Wayzata as the top boys team in the state. The boys team was led by Khalil Omar, Thomas McVay and Theo Rasmussen. The girls team finished 13th in their race led by Miriam Pickar, Evelyn Scott and Zoe Ley.
