Nine weeks from today, North Dakotans will vote in the general election. Among the choices on the ballot will be who serves on our state’s highest court.

For nine years, Justice Jerod Tufte has served on the North Dakota Supreme Court with experience, independence, and careful judgment. He approaches each case by studying the record, applying the law as written, and treating every person before the Court fairly.

The work of a Supreme Court justice does not always attract headlines, but it matters. The Court’s decisions affect the people involved, guide judges and attorneys throughout the state, and shape how North Dakota law is understood for years to come.

Experience matters in that work. So do preparation, consistency, and respect for the proper role of a judge.

Justice Tufte is committed to helping North Dakota’s courts use emerging technology responsibly and to educating the legal community about both its benefits and its risks.

Today, he presented a continuing legal education program to the Big Muddy Bar Association on generative AI and the law. He discussed the North Dakota Supreme Court’s recent AI-related decision, an administrative order, and practical methods for using AI while preserving accuracy, confidentiality, human judgment, and accountability.

Responsible innovation begins with understanding the technology, setting clear safeguards, and ensuring it serves the administration of justice.

Back-to-school season is here across North Dakota. With the University of North Dakota’s law school classes starting today and students across the state returning to classrooms over the past few weeks, wishing students, teachers, faculty, and staff a great year ahead.

Good judges never stop learning.

Justice Jerod Tufte’s work requires careful reading, thoughtful listening, and an open mind. That commitment extends beyond the courtroom through his service on the board of The Study, formerly Humanities North Dakota, which promotes lifelong learning and civic conversation across our state.

Curiosity and humility matter in public service. Before reaching a decision, a justice must listen carefully, consider competing arguments, and understand the law fully.

Fair and open courts are critically important for the disputes that can only be resolved by a court. But not every family dispute needs to be fought out in a courtroom.

North Dakota’s Family Law Mediation Program gives families a chance to work through difficult issues with a neutral mediator, and 93% of participants surveyed said they were satisfied with the program.

Mediation can help reduce conflict, find workable solutions, and keep the focus on what matters most.

The program is offered at no cost to participating families.

⚖️ Did you know the North Dakota court system has a Legal Self Help Center?

If you're facing a court matter, talking with a lawyer is always a good option. A lawyer can give you advice based on your specific situation.

If you're representing yourself in a civil case, the Legal Self Help Center provides forms, instructions, and general information about the court process. It covers matters like answering a summons, small claims, divorce and custody, and probate. Note that it handles civil matters only; it can't help with criminal cases or give legal advice.

On the same site, you can find your local courthouse, search for a lawyer, and sign up for email notice whenever documents are filed in a public court case.

We were out enjoying the sunshine and checking out the cars at the Chokecherry Festival Car Show in Williston today. I enjoyed the festival during the 2016 campaign and made it a priority to come back. These events remind me what makes our North Dakota communities so special—neighbors coming together, sharing their passion for classic cars, crafts, or home-made sweets, and enjoying a beautiful summer day.
