What is Narcan, and why should you know about it?

Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose and help restore breathing until emergency help arrives. It’s something most people never think about until suddenly they need it.

And the person who needs it may not be who you picture. It could be someone’s child, parent, friend, coworker or neighbor. Someone doing well in recovery. Someone who made one dangerous decision. Someone who simply didn’t know what was in what they took.

In that moment, their story doesn’t matter. They are still someone’s person, and their life is worth saving.

Sometimes another chance comes down to someone nearby having Narcan and knowing what to do. Call 911, give Narcan if available and stay with the person until help arrives.

When one person reached out to WV211, they were feeling stuck. Insurance wouldn’t cover their prescription, and the cost was becoming overwhelming.

A WV211 Community Resource Specialist listened, understood their situation, and connected them to prescription drug assistance programs to assist with the cost. But the support didn’t stop there. The Navigator also helped them access additional financial assistance for housing expenses and food, which were supports the person didn’t know were available.

Sometimes one call can open the door to multiple kinds of help. If you’re facing challenges, you don’t have to navigate them alone.
