⚠️COMPLETE BURN BAN ⚠️

Per the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office:
Due to the continued risk of fire and the commitment of shared firefighting resources to ongoing wildland fire response efforts across Washington State, the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office is implementing a complete burn ban effective Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

The burn ban prohibits all outdoor open burning in unincorporated Skagit County. The only exception is agricultural burning, which may continue only when conducted in accordance with applicable state and local regulations and any required permits.

Propane fire tables and other gas-fueled cooking appliances are permitted during this ban. Self-contained wood pellet grills and cooking devices are allowed only when placed on a concrete or other non-combustible surface. Charcoal grills are permitted. Charcoal and ash must be disposed of in a metal container and thoroughly soaked with water. The container should be kept at least ten feet from vegetation or combustible materials for 72 hours.

If you are within the limits of an incorporated city or town, check with your fire department for current burning restrictions.

⚠️⚠️BURN BAN⚠️⚠️
Reminder that a BURN BAN is currently in effect in Skagit County. Even though it is currently raining, conditions have been dry and are expected to return to dry and very hot within the next day or so. Other areas of the state are experiencing extreme fire conditions which will stretch fire resources extremely thin. A statewide BURN BAN has been issued that mirrors the ban that is currently in effect in Skagit County.

SCFD3 and Brush 324 have been busy, they were reassigned to the Ransier fire, and have now been assigned to the Bradeen Hill fire in Stevens County. This fire is currently estimated at 4,100+ acres and 7% containment.
UPDATE: 7/31/26
The crew has been moved to the Modrite fire, outside of Inchelium in Stevens/Ferry Counties. This fire is at 37,000+ acres with concerning "severe" fire conditions in the forecast.

SCFD3 and Brush 324 are now assigned to the Railroad Fire burning in Grant county. This fire, named due to it's origin proximity to a railroad bridge, is currently estimated at 1,200+ acres and 0% containment.

SCFD3 currently has a crew of 3, FF Bonsen, FF/EMT Cain and FF/EMT Rouw, on Brush 324 deployed to Franklin County as part of an interagency team. They are assigned to the "Neff Jones Fire" that has burned over 7,100 acres near Columbia Plateau Trail State Park.

Did You Know the Majority of Skagit County’s Firefighters Are Volunteers?

When the tones drop in many parts of Skagit County, the people responding are not paid, full time firefighters. They are your neighbors, your coworkers, and your friends who have chosen to give their time and training to protect the community they live in.

Skagit County is served by more than a dozen fire protection districts, and outside of the larger cities like Mount Vernon, Anacortes, and Burlington, most of these departments rely heavily or entirely on volunteers. Places like Concrete, Hamilton, Day Creek, Lake McMurray, Guemes Island, and Conway keep their communities safe almost entirely through volunteer crews who train together, respond together, and show up whenever they are needed, day or night.

Becoming a volunteer firefighter here typically starts with an application through the local district, followed by training in firefighting, emergency medical response, and often hazardous materials handling. Many departments offer their own academies or partner with regional training programs so volunteers can build real, certified skills while serving their own community. Some districts even offer resident programs, where volunteers live at the station in exchange for duty hours, creating a built-in crew ready to respond at a moment’s notice, such as Alger Fire District 14.

Based on figures from individual districts across the county, Skagit County is home to an estimated 300 to 400 volunteer firefighters, though the true number shifts as departments recruit and train new members throughout the year. Every one of them is someone who chose to say yes when their community needed them most.

⚠️Traffic Advisory⚠️
•WSDOT Paving project to improve SR 534 begins work Wednesday, July 15, near Conway.

Plan ahead for delays; work expected to wrap up in late August
CONWAY – A paving project begins Wednesday, July 15, to create a smoother ride for travelers along a 4.5-mile stretch of State Route 534 between Conway and Lake McMurray.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will grind down existing pavement, lay a fresh layer of asphalt and add new pavement markings along the rural highway in southern Skagit County. Construction is expected to finish in late August, but the work requires dry weather so rain could delay progress.

The project will repave SR 534 from the Interstate 5 interchange to a half mile west of the SR 9 intersection. The final stretch of SR 534 will be repaved as part of a future Complete Streets project aiming to create an accessible, comfortable and efficient system for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users.

•Plan ahead: What to expect
Most grinding and paving will be done at night beginning in late July and will finish in early August, provided the weather is dry enough. From 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Friday mornings, flaggers and pilot vehicles will alternate northbound and southbound traffic through work zones. People should expect delays on SR 534 during work hours.

The northbound I-5 on- and off-ramps at SR 534 also will close when crews are working near the interchange, but signed detours will get people where they are going. WSDOT will announce dates for lane and ramp closures on its online, real-time Travel Map and social media channels when they are scheduled. People also can sign up for Skagit County email updates on the WSDOT website.

After paving finishes and the asphalt cures, crews will return in late August to add permanent lane markings and wrap up construction. This work is being done by Lakeside Industries Inc., as part of $2.3 million contract.
