Please see below for some home security tips from our local Sheriff's Deputy....

First, there are several things that would be thieves look for to determine whether you may be home or not. These can include, but are not limited to, mail build up in a mail box and an empty trash dumpster by the street that is not moving. It can also include limited lights in a home after dark.

As a law enforcement officer, I would recommend a few things:
- Place a hold on your mail through the USPS if you are going to be on vacation. This limits the ability of a would-be-thief from taking your mail and recognizing that you are not home.
- Put your trash dumpster by the road on the day of pick and as close to the time of pick up as possible. Thieves go through trash to attempt to gain personal information for identity theft. Once the bin is empty, remove it from the roadway or have a friend do so if you are on vacation. Not only do thieves look for information in a dumpster but they also look to see if it is by the roadway empty for an extended time frame.
- Use a timer on lights. A consistently dark house is a key to a potential thieve that a home is not occupied or vacant.
- When feasible, have a residential alarm system.
