đźš’ Brasstown Fire Station Construction Nearing Completion đźš’

We are excited to announce that construction of the new Brasstown Fire Station is nearing completion! This project represents a significant investment in the safety and protection of the Brasstown community, and we look forward to opening our doors and serving the citizens of the Cherokee County portion of Brasstown.

Beginning July 1st at 12:00 AM, Peachtree Fire & Rescue will officially assume fire protection responsibilities for the Cherokee County portion of the Brasstown Fire District. We are honored to continue the proud tradition of service to this community and are committed to providing the highest level of emergency response and fire protection possible.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Clay County Fire & Rescue for their many years of dedicated service to the Brasstown community. Their commitment and professionalism have served the area well, and we thank them for their unwavering dedication.

We would also like to express our gratitude to the John C. Campbell Folk School for partnering with us through a land-use agreement that has made construction of this station possible. Their support and commitment to the community have been instrumental in bringing this project to life.

In addition to improved fire protection services, residents of the Cherokee County portion of Brasstown are expected to benefit from an improved ISO Fire Protection Rating, moving from a Class 6 to a Class 5. This improvement may help property owners realize savings on their homeowners insurance premiums while enhancing overall fire protection capabilities.

We look forward to these new beginnings and to serving the Brasstown community for many years to come. Thank you for your support as we prepare to open this new station and continue our mission of protecting lives and property.

As we continue to mourn the loss of Alan Andrews, we now also mourn the loss of retired Murphy Fire Chief WC King.

Chief King was an instrumental part of shaping and laying the foundation for the Cherokee County fire service. Through his knowledge, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Cherokee County, he helped pave the way for modern fireground tactics and trained countless fire service professionals throughout the years.

It was truly an honor to have the opportunity to take part in a water supply class taught by Chief King. His passion for the fire service and dedication to teaching others will never be forgotten.

Please keep the King family, along with the Murphy Fire Department and all those impacted by this loss, in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of one of our own, Alan.

Alan was more than just a member of our department—he was family. He never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel welcome the moment they met him. Whether it was on a call, around the station, or out in the community, Alan’s kindness, humor, and genuine heart left a lasting impression on all of us.

His dedication to serving others and his love for Grape Creek and Peachtree Fire Department will never be forgotten. The impact he made will continue to live on through the people he touched every single day.

Please keep Alan’s family, friends, and our fire department family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, brother. We’ve got it from here.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.
