Why do we chip seal roads that don’t appear to be in bad shape❓ We’ve seen this question arise a few times this week.

The purpose of chip seal is a preventative and pro-active maintenance measure. Chip seal helps protect our pavement from water intrusion and everyday wear, extending the life of the road and delaying the need for much more expensive repairs or reconstruction. 🛣️

On newly paved roads chip seal is placed as a pro-active treatment to fill cracks and prevent water intrusion as they are occurring below the chip seal surface. With the freeze and thaw cycles in Michigan, every road is destined to crack and allow for a pot hole to form.

If we wait until a road is full of potholes and major cracks, the repair costs increase dramatically. Preventive maintenance allows us to preserve more miles of roadway with the funding available.

It’s been another productive week for our chip seal crews! So far this week, we’ve completed work on White Road, Sheridan Road, and Whitehall Road.

Now, we’re moving on to Scenic Drive.

Thank you to residents and motorists for your patience as our summer chip seal work continues. Every mile preserved today helps keep our roads in better condition for years to come.

Fresh pavement is going down today on Hoffman Street and Rose Street north of Apple Avenue.

This work is part of a local participation project between the MCRC and Egelston Township. By partnering together and sharing project costs, we are able to make improvements that benefit local residents while stretching transportation dollars further.

New asphalt provides a smoother ride, improves safety, and helps protect the roadway from future wear and weather-related damage. These investments will help keep these roads in good condition for years to come!
