BEFORE YOU BUY A USED TRAILER… READ THIS FIRST.
A Caldwell County resident thought they had found a great deal on a used trailer.
Instead, they lost both the trailer and every dollar they paid after a VTR-68-A inspection conducted by our office revealed the trailer had been reported stolen. Because it was stolen property, it had to be seized pending its return to the rightful owner.
Our Auto Theft Unit is actively investigating this case to identify the person or persons responsible for selling the stolen trailer.
Cases involving VIN cloning, altered VINs, stolen trailers, and fraudulent vehicle sales are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Criminals are counting on buyers to skip simple verification steps before handing over their money.
It’s an expensive lesson that can happen to anyone.
Before buying a used trailer or vehicle from a private seller:
• Verify the VIN before you hand over any money.
• Make sure the VIN has not been altered, removed, or tampered with.
• Ask to see the title and confirm the seller is the legal owner.
• Be cautious of unusually low prices.
• Never let a seller rush the transaction.
• If something doesn’t feel right, walk away.
Taking a few extra minutes to verify what you’re buying could save you thousands of dollars.
Our office conducts VTR-68-A inspections for Caldwell County residents, and those inspections occasionally uncover stolen vehicles and trailers that otherwise may have gone undetected.
Our goal is not only to recover stolen property, but also to help prevent members of our community from becoming victims in the first place.
