As National Historic Preservation Month comes to a close, the Neligh Historic Preservation Commission–Certified Local Government (HPC-CLG) would like to thank everyone who helped make this student video series possible.

This special youth engagement project highlighted important historic sites, businesses, organizations, and community stories through the work of the Neligh-Oakdale Schools Civics Class under the direction of teacher Kimberly Alspaugh.

Throughout this series, students researched, documented, and shared the history of places that continue to shape Neligh’s identity and community pride. Their work demonstrated that historic preservation is not only about protecting buildings and artifacts, but also about passing along community stories, values, and stewardship to future generations.

The commission extends sincere appreciation to the students, Mrs. Alspaugh, community partners, featured organizations, and everyone who supports local preservation and educational initiatives in Neligh.

Projects like this help connect young people to their community, encourage civic engagement, and inspire future leaders to value and preserve the history that makes Neligh unique.

Thank you for following along throughout National Historic Preservation Month and for continuing to support preservation efforts in our community.

One room schoolhouses represent an important part of Nebraska’s rural educational history and remind us of the generations of students, teachers, and families who helped build strong rural communities.

The involvement of students in this project adds another meaningful layer to the story. By researching and presenting local history themselves, students gained a greater appreciation for the experiences of earlier generations and the importance of preserving community heritage.

This student-led project was created through the Neligh Historic Preservation Commission–Certified Local Government youth engagement initiative under the direction of teacher Kimberly Alspaugh.
