The LSU Ag Center and City Planning Commission's Urban Agriculture Program co-hosted our second annual training with Code Enforcement inspectors on how to identify regenerative agriculture practices. We talked about identifying native plants versus w**ds and how to properly identify cover crops, which can often be mistaken for w**ds but are intentionally planted to give farms and gardens a rest in the summer, build healthy soil, prevent w**d growth, and keep moisture in the soil.

CPC's Urban Ag Program recently published a 'Cues to Care' Guide which gives farmers and gardeners tips on how to maintain their lots in the summer to make it clear that they're implementing regenerative agriculture techniques.
"During the summer in Southeast Louisiana, maintenance is a challenge,” said Ms. Timmerman who often helps owners identify plant species growing on their property. “A lot of plant materials in our area respond quickly to heat and rainfall, growing faster than at other points in the year. Some species will grow several inches, overnight making mowing a challenge."

"Planting native plants and cover crops are important regenerative agriculture techniques which we encourage and support,” said Ms. Treffinger. “There are ways to implement these practices in a way that shows both your neighbors and the city's Code Enforcement inspectors that the planting is intentional, rather than neglect.”

Brownfields remediation is public health! Earlier this week, we shared some background about Brownfields and CPC's Brownfield program (CPCBP). Now, you can see work from the team in action. Today, the City Council voted to transfer previously contaminated land, that had undergone Brownfield remediation, from the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) to the City.

This vacant site will be developed as a new Confetti Kids park! This is a huge win and collaboration between the Confetti Kids Working Group, CPCBP, NORA, Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Department of Property Management (DPM)

The park will be located at 900 Elmira in Algiers.
