📸 This September, Flemish visual artist Jonas Vansteenkiste opens Hostile Architecture at New Image Gallery, James Madison University

Drawing on more than six years of photographic research across cities including Brussels, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Venice, Prague, and New York, the exhibition examines how urban design shapes human behavior, belonging, accessibility, and public space.

Through a compelling series of photographs, Vansteenkiste reveals the often-overlooked architectural interventions that influence how we move, gather, rest, and interact in our cities.

“Sometimes the best opportunities come from unexpected turns. Following the closure of our office in Mozambique, I’m excited to have joined the team at Flanders House in New York. It’s impressive to see how so many inspiring projects can be done here. New challenges mean new perspectives, new connections, and fresh energy. Excited for what’s ahead and looking forward to the months to come!”

Welcome to New York, Veerle!

🌈 As New York prepares to celebrate Pride, we are pleased to highlight a cultural moment connected to Flanders.

The New York Public Library will host a screening of Close (2022), the acclaimed film by Flemish director Lukas Dhont.

The film explores themes of friendship, identity, and belonging, issues that resonate deeply during Pride Month. Pride is not only a moment of celebration, but also a time to reflect on progress made, acknowledge ongoing challenges and reaffirm our commitment to equality and inclusion for all.

🍺 A few days after our Flanders Day celebration, we’re still raising a glass to an unforgettable evening!

In yet another reimagined celebration of the Flemish July 11th holiday, the Delegation of Flanders to the USA, together with Belgian Brewers and Belgian B**r World Experience, brought creatives, b**r lovers, and industry professionals together for a vibrant night of b**r, culture, and exchange.

🌎 Last week, our Policy Advisor Flore De Pauw represented the Delegation of Flanders to the USA at the NAFSA 2026 Conference and Education Fair, held from 26-29 May in Orlando (Florida) under the theme “Global by Design”.

This year’s theme highlighted the importance of thoughtful internationalization, bold innovation, meaningful storytelling, and sustainable practices in higher education worldwide.

Throughout the week, Flemish institutions, including KU Leuven, Ghent University, University of Antwerp, HOWEST and HOGENT, engaged with a wide range of American universities to strengthen partnerships and explore new collaboration opportunities.

We were also proud to co-host a Belgian Networking Reception, together with the Consulate General of Belgium in Atlanta, the Flemish Higher Education Council (VLUHR), Wallonia-Bruxelles International and Fulbright Belgium.

The reception provided a great opportunity to bring together Belgian and international partners from across the higher education community and to further strengthen our global academic connections.

NAFSA once again proved to be a valuable platform to foster transatlantic cooperation in higher education and innovation.
