In this week’s People of ACM profile, Wolfgang Lehner explains why the recent shift of separating compute and storage functions in data management systems is re-shaping the technology landscape. Lehner, a Professor at the Dresden University of Technology who was recently named an ACM Fellow, is also especially excited about the new possibilities of integrating agentic AI into database systems. Looking ahead, he contends that educating the next generation of database experts is critical. “We are currently facing the first ‘AI-native’ generation of students,” Lehner explains. “We have to put even more weight on theory—(students must be able to understand) the complexity of a scenario, and be able to capture the intentions of a programmer. in 1926, Turing Award recipient Kristen Nygaard was born. He received the 2001 with Ole-Johan Dahl, for ideas fundamental to the emergence of object oriented programming, through their design of the programming languages Simula I and Simula 67.

Thanks to Nygaard and Dahl, software became more reusable, reliable, and scalable. Happy Birthday to Katherine Johnson, who was born on this day in 1918.

As a NASA mathematician, Johnson calculated the flight trajectories that helped send American astronauts into space and safely return them to Earth. Her calculations were critical to Alan Shepard's first American crewed spaceflight, John Glenn's historic orbit around Earth, and the Apollo missions to the Moon.

Johnson's work helped demonstrate the essential role of mathematics and computing in space exploration. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.
