Branch History

Before the Revolutionary War, the Dutch who settled in the beautiful countryside, now known as the Upper West Side, called the area "Bloemendaal," meaning valley of flowers. Anglicized as Bloomingdale, this rural community was connected to the lower part of Manhattan by the Bloomingdale Road, its route largely echoed today by Broadway. In 1898, the community had its first library,

the Bloomingdale Branch of the New York Free Circulating Library, which was consolidated in 1901 with The New York Public Library. Sixty years later, a new Bloomingdale library opened in a modern two-story building one block east of its original location. The Bloomingdale Library - spacious and wheelchair accessible - houses collections for adults and teenagers for borrowing on the ground floor. The children's collection shares the second floor with an auditorium used for library programs and community meetings.

Join us on Saturday, May 30th at 2pm at for a theater games workshop! This 45 minute workshop is for kids ages interested in building confidence, being silly, and having fun. This class will feature vocal and movement warm ups, games that test reflexes and confidence, and exercises that allow students to use their imaginations. For ages 6-12, no registration required.

Join us at on Thursday, June 18th, at 5:30pm for our adult book discussion group! We will be having a lively discussion of Razerblade Tears by S.A. Cosby, where Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, band together in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life, hardened men Ike and Buddy Lee will confront their own prejudices about their sons and each other, as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys.
