40+ first-year students just met some of Lehigh’s oldest residents. At yesterday’s “The Trees of Lehigh,” a 5x10 walking tour led by University Historian Ilhan Citak and ITS tree enthusiast Stacey Kimmel-Smith, students wandered campus to discover:

🌲 One of the largest Kentucky coffee trees in the region
🌳 English boxwoods dating back to the French and Indian War
🪴 The conifer collection at Packard Lab, including the droopy-needled Himalayan pine
🌲 A “living fossil” dawn redwood beside Packer Chapel
🌴 The enormous green ash outside Chandler-Ullmann
🍃 Honey locusts along the Alumni Memorial Walkway
🍂 The alligator-barked persimmon near Linderman Library

There’s more to Lehigh’s trees than meets the eye. Stacey Kimmel-Smith (ITS) and Ilhan Citak (Special Collections) will lead a walking tour and discussion of Lehigh trees, including unique and rare species, Lehigh's buildings, landmarks and significance of our green spaces along with their stories. This walking tour will be less trees-as-species and more a tour of notable trees from the Lehigh history perspective. This event is a 5x10 first year student tour but all are welcome!

📅 Thursday, Oct 1
🕒 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
📍 Meet at the corner of Brodhead and Packer Avenue

“Bad drawings matter a lot." But why? What if the goal of drawing isn’t perfection, but a deeper way of seeing, understanding, and processing the world around us? In a recent campus talk and hands-on workshop hosted by the Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries, artist, neuroscientist, and educator Dr. Ann E. Fink explored how comics-making, quick sketches, and visual storytelling serve as powerful tools for observing health, identity, and the human experience.

The events coincided with Fink’s solo exhibition, Study to Story: Graphic Narrative from Life, featuring over 50 works now on view on the 6th floor south of Fairchild-Martindale Library through the spring 2027 semester!

Lehigh Libraries’ "Unfinished Chapter: The First 250 Years of American Liberty" is getting some local attention.

WFMZ recently visited Linderman Library to explore the exhibition, which uses materials from Special Collections to examine 250 years of American history through questions of liberty, immigration, identity, and change. The story also includes Lehigh University Art Galleries’ "This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary," with perspective from Mark Wonsidler, LUAG Curator of Exhibitions and Collections.

Reflecting on the Statue of Liberty and the generations of immigrants who passed through nearby Ellis Island, Alex Japha, Digital Archives and Special Collections Librarian, noted that their stories were about more than simply arriving in the United States.

“It wasn’t just about arriving and being welcomed; it was about, you know, really making a life,” Japha said.

The exhibitions explore how ideas about liberty, identity, and the American experience have evolved over 250 years.

Lehigh University Libraries have once again earned national recognition from The Princeton Review, ranking #14 in the nation for Best College Library in The Best 392 Colleges: 2027 Edition. The distinction is based entirely on student survey responses and marks the Libraries’ second top-15 showing in recent years.

The ranking reflects students’ views of Linderman Library and Fairchild-Martindale Library and the resources, expertise, collections, technology, programs, and spaces they provide in support of learning and research.

“What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it reflects the voices of our students,” said Boaz Nadav-Manes, University Librarian. “Our goal is for Lehigh’s libraries to be places where students feel they belong and where they can find the expertise, resources, spaces, and inspiration they need to succeed. Being recognized again among the nation’s best tells us that students value what we have built together - and challenges us to keep making their library experience even better.”
