That 95% accuracy comes from compound eyes containing 30,000 individual lenses and flight muscles that fire independently, letting dragonflies adjust each wing separately mid-chase. They calculate intercept courses the way fighter pilots do, predicting where prey will be rather than chasing where it is now. A single dragonfly patrols roughly a quarter-acre territory, methodically clearing it sector by sector. The math becomes personal when you realize what this means for evening barbecues and morning coffee on the deck. Create shallow water features, plant native sedges around pond edges, and avoid pesticides that eliminate their food source. A small garden pond becomes a mosquito-clearing station that works while you sleep. The most effective pest control never announces itself. [X4UZU]

🎣 Fish & Habitat Friday: Northern Pike Edition

This week, our team documented one of the fiercest—and flashiest—predators in Santee waters: the Northern Pike.

These toothy fish thrive in healthy aquatic systems with cool, oxygen-rich water. Spotting one is more than just a cool catch—it’s a sign that the ecosystem is supporting native biodiversity. That’s why we survey and track species like the pike: to protect habitats and guide long-term conservation.

And since it’s National Donut Day, here’s a fun fact:
🍩 A northern pike will circle a school of baitfish with the same focus you might have circling a box of glazed donuts.
Except... they don’t share.

We’ll stick to donuts. They’ll stick to dinner.

🌍 Tech in the Field – Thursday Spotlight
It’s World Environment Day — and we’re celebrating the simple tools that help us protect what matters most.

From high-end DSLR cameras to cell phones and field tablets, photography plays a critical role in our environmental work. We use images to document plant life, track water quality, monitor habitat changes, and share the story of the land with the community.

Sometimes it’s a drone flight or a calibrated survey photo — and sometimes it’s a quick phone snapshot that ends up in a report, on a poster, or in our field guide.

Every photo we take helps preserve a piece of what we’re working to protect.
