What if I told you Virginia has billions of dollars moving through our government every year, but we have never really asked a basic question:

Who should that money be working for?

Because right now, when government collects taxes, fees, and revenue, that money has to sit somewhere. Banks get to use deposits to make loans, make investments, and make money.

So here is the question I want us to wrestle with:

What if Virginia had its own bank?

A public bank, owned by the Commonwealth, that could take some of Virginia’s financial strength and put it back to work for Virginia.

Helping local banks lend to small businesses, financing housing, and building infrastructure in communities.

Helping us invest in places the traditional banking system has decided are too risky, too small, or simply not profitable enough.

AND... this is not some imaginary idea.
North Dakota has had a state-owned bank since 1919.

Maybe the next big conversation about affordability isn’t only about how much government spends.

We need to talk about who gets to use our money while we’re waiting to spend it, and who benefits from it.
