As State Senator for the 21st District, one of the greatest privileges of this work is bearing witness to the next generation of leaders who are stepping up to address the challenges facing our communities.

This Saturday, I am honored to serve as the inaugural commencement speaker for the Emerging Leaders for Environmental Equity program, a twelve-week leadership and policy training initiative hosted by Virginia Pathways to Justice.

The inaugural cohort spent twelve weeks researching environmental injustice right here in Hampton Roads, developing a real policy proposal, and implementing a community-based project that will outlast the program that funded it. That is not just impressive. That is the kind of civic engagement our communities depend on.

Environmental justice is not an abstract concept. It is a daily reality for too many of our neighbors. These four young women chose to study it, understand it, and do something about it. That is leadership. And it deserves to be recognized.

I look forward to bringing my full presence to that stage Saturday evening and honoring the work of this remarkable inaugural cohort.

Memorial Day is more than a holiday, it is a time to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As we gather with family and loved ones, let us never forget the heroes who never made it home. We honor their legacy today and always.

The Virginia Supreme Court has made its decision on the redistricting amendment, and while it is respected, many are left feeling frustrated and unheard.

Virginians showed up and used their voices at the ballot box, calling for a fairer and more transparent process. That matters.

This moment is not the end, it’s a call to stay informed, stay engaged, and continue advocating for a system that reflects the will of the people.
