Slow-Motion Ecology: Lichens Up Close

Saturday, August 22, 2:00–4:30 PM
Westconnaug Meadows- Scituate Land Trust & Conservation Commission

Join Patrick for a slow walk and talk devoted to lichens. This is not a fast-paced hike. We’ll make frequent stops to look closely, take photographs, and notice the features that help us identify and understand lichens.

Along the way, we’ll compare lichens growing on rocks, bark, and other surfaces while discussing photography, identification, and lichen taxonomy. Artists, photographers, slow walkers, and curious observers are especially encouraged to attend.

Patrick is a RImycoS member and hobbyist with an interest in lichens and native plant gardening. All ages are welcome, and no experience is needed.

Last Thursday wrapped up this year's Youth Conservation League visit to Scituate, and we couldn't be more grateful for all they've accomplished! 🌳

Here the crew is at Lawton Farm planting trees, clearing trails, and refreshing trail blazes—helping keep our conserved lands healthy, beautiful, and welcoming for everyone who enjoys them. Their hard work will have a lasting impact.

Thank you to the incredible YCL crew for your dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to conservation. We can't wait to welcome you back next year!

What a week of stewardship in Scituate! 💚

For the past three days, the Youth Conservation League has been working alongside volunteers from the Scituate Land Trust, Conservation Commission, and more at Esek Hopkins Park, Westconnaug Meadows, and Lawton Farm. Together they've improved trails, tackled invasive plants, and cared for native plantings that help support local wildlife.

This week we're grateful for the incredible work of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Youth Conservation League (YCL) as they lend their energy and enthusiasm to conservation projects across Scituate! 🌿

Working side by side with volunteers from the Scituate Land Trust, Conservation Commission, and more, these dedicated young people are helping care for the places that make our community special. Their hard work today is helping ensure that Scituate's forests, fields, and open spaces remain healthy and welcoming for generations to come. Thank you, YCL—we're proud to work alongside you!

The Scituate Land Trust and Conservation Commission worked with the Youth Conservation League today at Esek Hopkins Park and discovered something very upsetting. Someone has been stealing plants from the native plant garden! Two penstemon were stolen and another was dug up along with a dogwood. We are volunteers who work hard to maintain our conservation properties and this is so disappointing. This is not what we should be teaching our young people.
