Nutley Public Schools

Nutley Public Schools The Nutley Public School District page will provide information to parents, students, staff, and community about the happenings in our schools.

The township of Nutley is located approximately 15 miles west of New York City in Essex County. The 2000 census listed the population of Nutley at 27,362 in 3.4 square miles with approximately 11, 000 households and 7,400 families. In 2010, the population is estimated to be approximately 30,000. This growth reflects how desirable Nutley is as a residential community with outstanding public service

s and significant support for all citizens. The area now known as Nutley has had residents dating back to 1688. Originally incorporated as Franklin Township in 1874, the town became Nutley in 1902. Many of the Community Offices were constructed in the first quarter of the 20th Century and are still well maintained. The vibrant center of the town features many stately structures such as the Middle School, the High School, the Town Library, Municipal Offices and a beautifully maintained athletic field. As one views this impressive complex, it is clear that Nutley prides itself on tradition sustained in responsible ways. The extensive park system in the town is another clear indicator of how well planned Nutley is and has always been. Nutley has been designated as one of the Best Places to live in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly magazine. The Nutley School District serves approximately 4,100 students in Kindergarten through grade 12. The five elementary schools serve students K-6 and include the Lincoln School, the Radcliffe School, the Spring Garden School, the Washington School and the Yantacaw School. The John H. Walker Middle School serves students in grades 7-8 while Nutley High School addresses the needs of students in grades 9-12. The Nutley Schools have a long tradition of educational excellence. Nutley students have consistently scored above the State average on tests administered as part of the New Jersey State Testing Program. Nutley students compete in various academic competitions on town, county, state and national levels. Nutley has frequently been honored as one of the top communities for music education in the United States. Specifically, the Music Program has been, for many years, an award winning program on both state and national level. Nutley Schools opened a full day kindergarten program in September 2010. Many of these schools were constructed by the beginning of the 20th century and they have been refurbished by referendums in 2002, 2004 and 2006 totaling 68 million dollars. The final stages will be completed in 2011. Two of the elementary schools are heated by Geo Thermal systems. School Budgets are very consistently supported by the community. The School District’s website as well as the township website nutleynj.org is extensive, and informative. It is another indication of this attractive suburban community that encourages citizens to support actively the rich opportunities that Nutley, New Jersey offers citizens of all ages.

Makenna DeJianne (NHS Junior) created a presentation and spoke to multiple World History freshman classes about her great aunt, Agnes Negra’s role as a Homefront Hero during WWII. Her book “Waves of Hope” details how she listened to broadcast radio and then informed families of the whereabouts of their loved ones. Mrs Negra’s message was that small acts of kindness can have a lasting effect on others. Makenna chose to extend her learning about World War II in history class to make a personal connection that she was willing to share with her peers. Makenna generated her own presentation to help her classmates in World History extend their own knowledge of World War II and make a local connection to this important historical event.
