⚠️CROSSWALK SAFETY⚠️

With school back in session, this is a great time for a reminder on crosswalk safety!

Be alert, be cautious, be patient. Know the difference between types of crosswalks and your responsibility as a motorist.

Let's all work together to keep our students and pedestrians everywhere safe!

Back-to-school season is full of new lessons, but some skills take time to develop.

You wouldn’t expect a first grader to solve a high school math problem. In the same way, young children may not yet have the skills needed to be safe pedestrians.

Children under 10 need to cross the street with an adult. Every child is different, but developmentally, most kids are unable to accurately judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles until around age 10.

As students head back to class, let’s make sure they have an adult by their side when it’s time to cross the street. 🚸📚

Here are a few quick reminders to share with kids as they head back to school and spend more time walking around the community:

1. Use crosswalks and sidewalks!

2. Look right, left, and right again before crossing the street.

3. Make eye contact with any drivers at the crosswalk before crossing the street.

4. If listening to music, remove headphones or lower the volume before crossing the street.

5. Use a cellphone only in a safe area, away from traffic.

With the school year beginning, it’s a great time to reinforce safe walking habits.

🚸 Teach children to look left, right, and left again and to keep watching as they cross.

📵 Encourage “heads up, phones down” to avoid distractions.

🚶‍♀️‍➡️ Always use sidewalks and crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street.

🚗 Remind kids to stay alert for turning or backing vehicles and to never run into the road or cross between parked cars.

👧 Children under 10 should always cross with an adult.

🔦 When it’s dark, help them stay visible with bright or reflective clothing.

Let’s all stay alert, model safe habits, and work together to keep every child safe on their walk to and from school. Did you know? Males account for more than 6 in 10 fatal pedestrian injuries among children.

A local ER doctor says roughly 1/3 of the traumas the hospital is seeing right now are from an e-bike or an e-scooter accident.

They, along with police, urge parents to educate their kids on laws and safety tips for riding.

When riding at dusk, dawn or in the evening, be bright and use lights – and make sure your bike has reflectors as well. It's also smart to wear clothes and accessories that have retro-reflective materials to improve biker visibility to motorists.
