As America turns 250, our democracy is being tested, and our community deserves the tools to hold the line. That's why the National Urban League and the Demand Diversity Roundtable created America 250: A Guide for Defending Democracy.

This nonpartisan civic education tool was created because democracy is not a spectator sport. With our fundamental rights facing modern tests, this guide provides a clear framework for every American, regardless of political party, to evaluate whether our leaders are truly upholding their oath to the Constitution.

How to put this resource to work for you:
· Prepare for the Polls: Use the guide’s nonpartisan criteria to research candidate records before you cast your ballot.
· Master the Town Hall: Bring the guide to community meetings to stay focused on the issues that matter most: the rule of law and equal opportunity.
· Vet the Information: Use the guide to cut through the noise of campaign ads and look for evidence of a leader’s commitment to justice.
· Educate Your Circle: Use it as a conversation starter with family and neighbors to ensure our entire community is showing up informed.

Knowledge is your greatest asset at the ballot box.

Today, we recognize the history made last year, June 9th 2025, when John Ewing Jr. was sworn in as the first elected Black mayor in Omaha’s history.

Mayor Ewing took office in June 2025, winning with 57% of the vote and stepping into his role just 10 days before joining the community at the Juneteenth parade. This moment was a significant marker of progress for our city, bringing a new era of representation to Omaha.
Since taking office, Mayor Ewing has prioritized city infrastructure and accessible transit.

Most recently, he championed an initiative with Heartland Bike Share to provide free electric bike rides to all Omaha-Metro residents through 2026, describing it as an essential step forward for our city’s transit system.

We honor this historic milestone and the leadership that continues to shape a more connected Omaha.

105 years ago this week, they burned down Black Wall Street.

Greenwood. Tulsa. A community of doctors, lawyers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and families who built something extraordinary — and paid for it with their lives and their livelihoods.

The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in American history. Over 300 people were killed. 35 blocks destroyed. Generational wealth — wiped out in a single night.

For too long, this history was buried. But we carry it forward.

Because Greenwood wasn't just a place — it was proof of what Black communities are capable of when opportunity meets determination. And it's a reminder of exactly why the work we do at Urban League of Nebraska matters so deeply.

Every family we help achieve homeownership. Every young person we place in a career-ready internship. Every entrepreneur we support. Every resume strengthened and credit score raised — it's all part of rebuilding what was taken.

We honor the Greenwood community by continuing to build.

Take a moment today to share this history with someone who needs to hear it. And if you or someone you love needs support — job training, financial coaching, youth programs — we are here for you.

A Leader In the Making
Today we want to shine a light on Donae, a proud member of our Youth Attendance Navigator program and a shining example of everything this program is built to inspire.
A current senior and member of the National Honor Society, Donae has already made an incredible mark since joining us this school year. Whether she is serving as a mentor to her peers or balancing academic commitments, her dedication to excellence is evident to everyone around her.

Donae has shown a high level of focus on her future. She has taken significant steps toward her next chapter by completing her FAFSA and finalizing multiple scholarship applications with impressive determination.

Her heart for service also shines through her work in the community. During our Urban League Family Night, she volunteered her time to support local families and ensure the event was a success. Within the program, she has become a steady source of encouragement, frequently taking the initiative to help and guide her peers.

Donae is a shining example of what it means to lead with your heart. We are proud of the positive impact she is making on her future and the Urban League community!

Help us celebrate Donae’s hard work and leadership! Like, comment, and share. 🎓✨
