This morning, we helped kick off Good Neighbor Week, sponsored by One Omaha, at St. John AME Church. The sermon discussed two of the most important commandments in Christian tradition: Love God. And Love your neighbor. That is a driving force for me. My thanks Pastor Benjamin Finnell for the stirring reminder to love our neighbor. Of course, we couldn’t let the moment pass without reminding our young neighbors to … stay in Omaha!

After the service, the youths of the church participated in a neighborhood audit.

Today is a milestone for Heart Ministry Center, Omaha, and most importantly, the families and residents of North Omaha who have waited for greater access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food in their own neighborhood. A new store will rise at 25th and Lake.

Access to fresh food should not depend on your zip code. For too many families in North Omaha, grocery shopping has required traveling farther, piecing together transportation, or making difficult choices about where and how to purchase the food their families need.

Today isn’t simply about putting a grocery store in North Omaha, it’s about what it says to this community. It says North Omaha families deserve convenience. They deserve quality. They deserve healthy choices. They deserve investment.

I’m grateful to our city teams, to donors and to the Heart Ministry Center team, whose vision for fresh, affordable food access in North Omaha is becoming a reality through your support. This project shows what strong partnerships can accomplish.

As Mayor and Maverick, I was very proud yesterday to break ground on the new Howard L. Hawks Training Center and Maverick Park Clubhouse. This amazing facility will be connected to Baxter Arena by a skywalk. This will help our student athletes and will send a strong message about UNO and Omaha being a place wher we want excellence to grow. Go Mavs!

When we launched the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, mental health was an issue that came up over and over – our young leaders want to address it.

So tonight, Racquel Henderson took them to a training by the The Kim Foundation - Advocating for Mental Health Services to increase mental health literacy to recognize when someone is struggling and how to help them.

The North Omaha Visitors Center donated space and provided dinner and snacks for the council. Two more of these sessions follow - one in west Omaha and one in south Omaha.

Catching up from a busy weekend!

I am constantly reminded of how inspiring Omahans are.

Attended thr second annual International Mental Health and Well-Being Summit put on by Femi's Heart Foundation. This local organization honors the whole person in body – encouraging the donation of blood, in mind and in soul, promoting mental health awareness.

Then it was off to the North Omaha Boys & Girls Club, where volunteers assembled a playground.

Finally, we ended the day at Gene Leahy Mall, where we celebrated Mexican independence and culture. It was a reminder of Omaha’s rich story of immigration and an opportunity to express support for this community.

On this somber day, we remember the loss, the sacrifice, the courage and the way America came together. I hope and pray the families of all who lose loved ones can find peace and that our world can, too.
