I have stood with Labor for a very long time, so Labor Day always carries special meaning for me.

Today, I spent time across Philadelphia with labor leaders and members from dozens of unions, celebrating Union pride and their collective hard work that makes Philadelphia strong.

The municipal union workers who clean our streets, pick up our trash, keep our City safe, educate our children and do so many other things. The building trades unions who make our skyline grow. Every union member who contributes to life in our great City.

Philly is a Union town and I am a pro-labor, pro-Union Mayor!

One moment that meant a great deal today was honoring Sam Staten Jr. and the Staten family. Sam Jr. and his late father, Sam Staten Sr., have been giants in Philadelphia’s labor and community, and longtime friends and allies of mine. Seeing that family legacy placed permanently on a Philadelphia street was a powerful reminder of what they have meant to this city. LiUna Labors Rising.

I’m also very proud of the people in the Parker administration who help lead our city every day. From Chief of Staff Tiffany W. Thurman to Managing Director Carlton Williams, Chief Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley, and every senior city leader who joined me today, thank you for your service to Philadelphia. And to our 29,000-person city workforce, thank you always for everything you do!

Music has always been part of my heart and soul.

There was no way I was going to let this historic 2026 year pass without honoring three men whose music helped define the sound of this city and carry Philadelphia around the world: Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell.

At The Dell Music Center, a place that holds such a special place in the heart of Black Philadelphia, I was proud to present each of these legends with a Liberty Bell, and to honor Kenny Gamble with the Key to the City of Philadelphia.

Their music gave us words for love, struggle, unity and possibility.

“People all over the world, join hands.”

“Ain’t no stoppin’ us now.”

“Wake up everybody.”

“You make me feel brand new.”

That is more than a soundtrack. That is Philadelphia.

Thank you to the near-capacity crowd that filled the Dell with love, and to our co-hosts Patty Jackson, Lady B and Mimi Brown.

What a lineup: The Intruders, Shirley Jones, The Legendary Blue Notes, The Delfonics featuring William Hart, Russell Thompkins Jr. & The New Stylistics, Jean Carne, The Three Degrees and The Spinners.

Honoring this dynamic trio during Philadelphia’s historic 250th Semiquincentennial made this moment even more meaningful, and I know it will forever be part of our city’s legacy.

One more deal for Philadelphia. 🛍️

Burlington is making our city its new corporate home, bringing up to 2,000 good jobs with family-sustaining wages and a $370 million private investment.

The City is investing $8 million to help make it happen, including $1 million through SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) Key Advantage to support unlimited transit access for Burlington employees for one year.

A big thank you to Governor Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger, Karen Fegely and Philadelphia Department of Commerce, Jerry Sweeney and Brandywine Realty Trust, and Burlington CEO Michael O’Sullivan for the partnership that helped bring this major investment home to Philadelphia.

Burlington already has eight stores across our city.

Now, the headquarters is coming home too. Philadelphia is OPEN for business. Welcome home, Burlington.

For three decades, Cecily has been a trusted voice in our homes and communities, helping Philadelphians prepare for everything Mother Nature could send our way — from snowstorms to heat waves and plenty of beautiful days in between.

What a comeback.

After 10 years away, the Philadelphia Cycling Classic returned to Philadelphia with world-class riders from around the globe, packed streets and the kind of energy only this city can bring.

Congratulations to our 2026 champions: Italy’s Chiara Consonni, winner of the women’s race, and Germany’s Tim Torn Teutenberg of Lidl-Trek, who took the men’s title.

And congratulations to all of the riders who took on the Manayunk Wall, Lemon Hill, Kelly Drive and the Parkway and gave us an incredible day of racing.

But Philly, you were part of the show too.

From Manayunk and East Falls to Brewerytown, Lemon Hill and the Parkway, you lined the course, cheered these riders on and reminded everyone why Philadelphia is one of the greatest sports cities in the world.

And thanks to the support of our sponsors, this was more than a world-class race. It was a world-class free experience for everyone to enjoy.

Thank you to former Mayor Michael Nutter, honorary co-chair Lisa Nutter, Carlos Rogers and Eric Robbins of Race Street Partners, the organizers, volunteers, nearly 20 City departments and everyone who put in the work to bring this Philadelphia tradition home.

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic returned to our City today after a 10-year absence, and I was so proud to be there and watch cyclists from around the region, country and world compete in exciting races.

Congratulations to the Men’s and Women’s race winners, and to every cyclist who raced today.

We are also closely monitoring two cyclists from the men’s race who were injured and required treatment at local hospitals. City first responders, including our Fire Department, on-site medical personnel, and my leadership team responded immediately to the incident, and I am grateful for their service. My team and I are at the hospital now.

Our thoughts and prayers are with both cyclists, their families and teams. Let’s lift them up as a City in prayer tonight.

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic rolls on with 120 miles of racing through Philadelphia, including Kelly Drive, Fairmount Park and the legendary Manayunk Wall.

This field includes internationally accomplished, award-winning riders taking on one of the most demanding one-day courses in American cycling, with a $75,000 prize purse on the line.

And Philly is showing up. Thank you to the fans bringing the energy from Manayunk to East Falls, Brewerytown and Lemon Hill.

After a 10-year hiatus, the Philadelphia Cycling Classic is officially BACK and on! 🚴🏾‍♀️

I got to sound the horn this morning and send the women’s field off down the Parkway, and the energy was incredible.

From the Parkway and Kelly Drive to Fairmount Park and the Manayunk Wall, this race shows off our city in a way few events can.

So good to see the riders back, the fans out, and Philadelphia showing up for world-class cycling again.

A big thank you to Race Street Partners, AmeriGas Propane Tanks, Penn Medicine, Subaru of America, and all of the sponsors and partners who helped bring this incredible event back to Philadelphia.

And if you can’t make it out to the course, you can watch the race live all day on 6abc and its streaming platforms.

It was something special to see Point Breeze Avenue filled from end to end today with families, music, vendors and so much South Philly pride for Council President Kenyatta Johnson Kenyatta Johnson’s Annual Community Appreciation Day.

This has become a true neighborhood tradition, bringing young people, local businesses and community organizations together for a day that celebrates South Philly at its best.

This year’s theme, Education Matters, could not be more timely. Our students just finished their first week back in school, and we are committed to surrounding them with the people, support and opportunities they need to succeed.

Thank you to Council President Johnson for continuing to pour into the community he loves, and to I-LEAD, our City agencies, volunteers and more than 100 local vendors who helped make today happen.

And South Philly got a show! Remy Ma Fabolous and SWV hit the stage, with Meek Mill and Gillie Da King joining the celebration. Philly radio favorites A is for Active 💫 and Lady B kept the energy going all day.

This is the spirit of One Philly: showing up for our neighborhoods, celebrating our young people and investing in their future.
